Expansion: The Trade Routes

The Castles of Burgundy's Trade Routes: a personal row of trade route cards that pays a bonus whenever a sold goods tile lands on a space of its colour.

Short tag: [Trade]

Twelve trade route cards, each with three coloured spaces. Each player lays a few in a row above their duchy; selling goods fills the row from left to right, and a tile that lands on a space of its own colour pays that space’s bonus.

Setup changes

Each player draws random trade route cards and lays them in random order above their duchy, making one row — their trade route:

Selling onto the trade route

sell goods You sell goods exactly as usual: the die must show the goods type, you sell the whole stack, and you still get 1 silver plus 2/3/4 VP per tile (Sell goods). The warehouse sells the same way.

The difference is where the sold tiles go:

  1. Instead of your sold-goods space, place the tiles one by one, left to right, on the next empty spaces of your trade route — one tile per space.
  2. Each time a tile’s colour matches the space it lands on, take that space’s bonus at once, before placing the next tile.
  3. When the route is full, further sold tiles go on your sold-goods space as usual.

Trade route bonuses

The bonus symbols use the overview-board icons: take workers, take a tile of a given kind from the board, place a tile from storage, sell goods, an extra action, 4 VP and silver. An extra action from a trade route cannot be paired with a die to make a double for a shield.

[Shields] See Taking a shield.

Monasteries 15 and 25 still count every goods tile you sold, wherever it lies.
