Solo Scenarios
The four Orléans solo scenarios by Reiner Stockhausen: The Dignitary, Capital Vierzon, Travelling Salesman and The Trip to Tours — setup, objectives, fixed events and how to win.
Short tag: [Solo]
How solo works
Each solo scenario uses a scenario board with a fixed event for every round, a goal and a round limit. Common to all four:
- Play as in the base game, but there is no census (phase 2) and no hour glass tiles: a neutral marker on the scenario board counts the rounds and names each round’s event.
- You start with one place tile already built and a reduced follower supply.
- Place tiles marked D, V or T in the appendix are not used in The Dignitary, Capital Vierzon or The Trip to Tours respectively (Cards & Components).
| Scenario | Difficulty | Rounds | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Dignitary | I–II | 16 | 8 citizens (7 for beginners) |
| Capital Vierzon | II–III | 14 | 5 objectives |
| Travelling Salesman | II–III | 15 | 5 deliveries |
| The Trip to Tours | I | 14 | 3 citizens and 3 of every good to Tours |
Difficulty: I easy, II medium, III hard.
The Dignitary
Goal: collect 8
citizens within 16 rounds (7 in the easier version).
Setup: base board and base Beneficial Deeds. Your merchant in Orléans; you start with the Stage Coach and no coins. Put a citizen in Vendôme, Tours, Vierzon, Sancerre, Argenton-sur-Creuse and St-Amand-Montrond — you take each when your merchant enters that town. Place 7 more citizens on citizen spaces of your choice (tracks, development track, deeds); there are not enough for all. Remove the D place tiles, then draw 5 tiles of each type face up and remove the rest. 4 neutral followers of each type and 6 gear wheels. No goods, no hour glass tiles.
Events:
| Event | Effect |
|---|---|
| Conference / Strike / Crusade / Pilgrimage | No scholars / craftsmen / knights / monks may be gained this round |
| Income | 2 coins per development status (later in the game: 1 per status) |
| Trading Day | 3, later 2, later 1 coin per trading station |
| Dues | Pay 5, later 10, later 15 coins (torture if not) |
| Technology Tax | 2 coins per gear wheel placed; remove a gear wheel for each one unpaid |
| Sabotage | No actions with a gear wheel this round |
| Axle Fracture | The Stage Coach cannot be used this round |
End: you win at the end of the round in which you take your 8th citizen.
Capital Vierzon
Goal: complete 5 objectives within 14 rounds.
Setup: base board. Merchant in Orléans; you start with the Market Stand and no coins. Use only 40 random goods: one on each road and waterway into Orléans, Blois, Tours, Loches, Montrichard, Vierzon, Bourges and Sancerre (never on spaces marked 3 or 4); the rest form the supply. 7 citizens: 5 on the game board and 2 on the scenario board’s deeds. Remove the V place tiles, then draw 5 of each type face up. 4 neutral followers of each type and 4 gear wheels.
| Objective | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Hire a Builder in Time | Pay 10 coins at once before round 9 starts |
| Establish a Building Company | A trading station in Loches |
| Deliver Building Materials to Vierzon | In Vierzon, pay goods worth 12 points at once |
| Make Vierzon a Fortress | Pay 25 coins at once |
| Make Vierzon the Capital | 28 or more points from development: (stations + citizens) × status |
Deeds: Expanding the University (1 coin or 1 development point per follower) and Founding the City Council (1 coin per follower), each with a citizen on completion.
Events: Strike, Pilgrimage, Crusade, Conference (no craftsmen / monks / knights / scholars), Harvest (twice), Income (3 coins per status), Amnesty (new followers may go straight onto action spaces), Plague, Sabotage, Goods Tax (1 coin per 2 goods), Trading Day (2 coins per station), Storm (your merchant cannot move) and Banishment (right after drawing, put 2 drawn followers back in the bag).
Harder: (A) at most one objective per round; (B) also complete them in order.
Travelling Salesman
Goal: make 5 deliveries within 15 rounds.
Setup: base board and base deeds. Merchant in Orléans; you start with the Market Stand, a
knight and a
scholar on your market (cubes stay on the first spaces) and 10
coins. Goods as for 4 players. Followers: 3 each of craftsmen, traders, boatmen, knights and scholars,
4 monks and 5 farmers; 8 gear wheels. Only these place tiles — I: Bathhouse, Cheese Factory, Hayrick, Herb
Garden, Tailor Shop, Winery, Wool Manufacturer; II: Cellar, Horse Wagon, Laboratory. No citizens, hour
glass tiles or trading stations.
| Delivery (be there, pay at once) |
|---|
| 3 |
| One of each good to Chartres |
| 2 |
| 3 |
| 1 |
Events: rounds 1–10 Feeding — pay 1 food or 2 coins; rounds 11–15 Great Feast — pay 2 food or 4 coins. If you cannot pay, you lose at once.
Harder: as Capital Vierzon (one per round; then in order).
The Trip to Tours

Goal: within 14 rounds, travel to Tours with 3 citizens and deliver 3 of every good there, all at once.
Setup: base setup with these changes: your merchant starts in Nevers with only 3 coins and the Stage Coach. The scenario board replaces the hour glass tiles and the Beneficial Deeds; put a citizen above each of its 2 deeds and one in Orléans. Remove the T place tiles. 8 neutral farmers, 5 of each other follower and 4 gear wheels.
Special rules: on a connection with 2 goods you take both. The Orléans citizen is yours when your merchant arrives there. You need your 3 citizens before delivering.
Deeds: Canalisation (1 coin or 1 development point per follower) and Knight Consecration (1 coin per follower), each with a citizen on completion.
Events: Strike, Crusade, Harvest (1, then 2, then 3 food; 5 coins per missing food), Drought (remove 4 grain from the map), Highwaymen (no roads), Amnesty, Plague, Technology Tax (2 coins per gear wheel), Income (2 coins per status), Pirates (wool and brocade on rivers back to the supply), Riots (give up a knight or 5 coins) and Axle Fracture (no Stage Coach).
