Expansion: The Plague
The Plague for Orléans: corpses that clog your bag and market, the plague doctor, the infirmary, indulgence cards, plague cards, 26 new events, new Beneficial Deeds and three place tiles.
Short tag: [Plague]
What it adds
The plague has reached Orléans. Almost every event now throws
corpses into your bag;
drawn corpses block your market. Your
plague doctor and the indulgence
cards are the remedy.
| Component | Count |
|---|---|
| 46 | |
| 1 each per colour (5) | |
| Hour glass tiles | 26 |
| Indulgence cards | 40 (A, B and C backs) |
| Plague cards | 15 |
| Beneficial Deeds board | “The Plague” side |
| Place tiles | Cemetery, Back Door, Medicinal Spring |
Setup changes
Set up the base game with these changes:
- Use the Plague side of the Beneficial Deeds board.
- Use the 26 Plague hour glass tiles instead of the base ones. Set Outbreak and Victory over Plague aside, shuffle piles A, B, C and D (6 each) and build the stack: Victory over Plague at the bottom, 4 D, 4 C, 4 B, 4 A and Outbreak on top — 18 tiles.
- Put all the corpses within reach.
- Deal each player one random A and one random B indulgence card, kept face down; return the other A and B cards. Shuffle the C cards into a pile and turn up 2.
- Shuffle the plague cards, turn up 3 and return the rest.
- Place tiles: never use Sacristy, Brasserie or Gunpowder Tower. Add the three Plague tiles to the others, then lay out 10 random tiles per category (12 with 5 players).
- Each player connects an Infirmary tile in their colour to the player board and sets their plague doctor aside.

Plague cards
The 3 face-up plague cards change the game: some only alter the starting position (resolve them, then set them aside), others hold all game and stay face up. All 15 are listed on Cards & Components.
Corpses
Each event tile shows how many corpses every player takes from the supply at the end of phase 6 and throws into their bag. If too few are left, give everyone the same smaller number.
- Corpses drawn in phase 3 go onto the market like followers but cannot be placed on any action space: they just take room.
- Corpses gained through an event, a place tile (Bathhouse) or a deed (Alchemy) by drawing go straight back to the supply.
- A corpse that should go on a full market goes back to the supply.
Getting rid of corpses
- After phase 6 you may throw all corpses on your market back into your bag — all or none. They may come out again next round.
- 6 or more corpses on the market: before phase 3 you may throw back enough to keep at most 5 (the Cemetery’s corpse does not count).
- Indulgence: fulfilling an indulgence card sends every corpse on your market back to the supply for good.
The plague doctor
From round 2 (after Outbreak), your plague doctor waits on the upper space of your infirmary. Each round he is available in addition to your draw and can stand on any action space — even a monk’s. After the action he returns to the infirmary, ready for next round. He never goes to a Beneficial Deed.
Indulgence
Reveal an indulgence card the moment you actively meet its condition, then return all corpses on your market to the supply. Keep the card face up: it scores its points at the end.
- A condition met before you held the card does not count (already 5 stations: “Build your 5th trading station” is lost). Donations and deliveries are fulfilled by paying, so goods you already hold are fine.
- Reveal cards during your turn, before or after your action — several at once if you like, even with no corpses — or in phase 6 if the event lets you meet the condition. It is never an action.
- A card that can no longer be fulfilled stays with you and scores nothing.
More indulgence cards
The Infirmary action (activated by a
monk or the plague doctor) takes one more card: a
face-up one (then turn up a replacement) or the top of the pile. A drawn card you cannot use goes face up
on display and you draw again — you must keep the second.
Beneficial Deeds The Plague

Usual deed rules; the plague doctor can never be sent. With 2 or 3 players only the upper deeds are used. Alchemy II opens only once Alchemy I is complete; Alchemy I gives no citizen, every other deed (Alchemy II included) gives one on completion.
| Deed | Each follower sent |
|---|---|
| Alchemy (I and II) | Any follower; draw one from your bag onto an action space (a corpse goes to the supply and ends it) |
| Autopsy | Return a corpse from your market to the supply; every other player puts one on their market (only if you returned one) |
| Coinage | 2 coins |
| Storeroom | 1 grain |
| Herbalism | 2 development points |
| Messenger Service | Move your merchant once by road or water, taking no good |
| Cremation | 1 development point or 1 coin |
