Setup changes
- Lay out the base-game side of the board. Each player takes a bag, a player board and one colour’s pieces (yellow and green match the coloured spaces on the boards): personal followers on the market, cubes on the first space of each track, trading stations in front of you.
- Seed the goods for 2 players (no goods on spaces marked 3 and 4).
- Starting with the start player, each places their merchant in any town.
- Put the 2-player number of followers by each track and 8 gear wheels in the supply.
- Lay out the Duel board with a neutral marker on its first event and a citizen on each of its 4 deeds; each player takes 4 neutral markers.
- Place the Bourgeois House board between you.
- Choose 20 place tiles: the start player picks 5 of type I, the other player 5 of type I and 5 of type II, then the start player 5 of type II. Return the rest.
- 5 coins each. No base hour glass tiles, no base Beneficial Deeds.
Course of play
Play as in the base game with a fixed event each round and no census. No torture: if you cannot pay what an event demands, you lose at once.
Bourgeois House
Either player may activate it with any one follower (not a personal one). When used, that follower goes
back to the supply, not your bag, and you also pay 1
citizen. Then choose one bonus:
1 good of your choice; move your merchant one road or waterway (taking a good); 5 coins; or 3 development
points.
Objectives
Mark an objective with your neutral marker the moment you meet it, in any order.
| Objective | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Learn Bookkeeping | Development status 3 or more |
| Establish Three New Branches | 3 trading stations, one of them in a town without a waterway |
| Deliver Wine to the Castle of Châtellerault | Be in Châtellerault and pay 3 wine |
| Clothe Your Lady | Be in Orléans and pay 3 fabrics, at least 1 of them brocade |
Duel deeds
Astronomy, Three-Field Rotation, Wine Press House and Angelology: each follower sent gives 1 coin, and
completing a deed gives its
citizen.
