The game board

Put the game board in the middle of the table.
Put each player’s Score token on space 0 of the score track.
Build the Discovery deck as for 2 players: pick at random 9 Tier I, 5 Tier II and 4 Tier III cards (tier shown on the back) and box the rest. Stack them face down with Tier III at the bottom, Tier II above and Tier I on top, light side up. Turn the top six cards face up on the board’s display.
[Moon] While building the deck, put the Tier II Dividing tile on the first Tier II card and the Tier III Dividing tile on the first Tier III card.
Put four random University Scale tiles in the university, then four random Subject tiles above them, arch side up.
Put the last two Subject tiles niche side up on the two ? spaces at the top of the university: with the two printed objectives they are this game’s four objectives.
Put each player’s University tokens on the stairs below the four Scale tiles.
Put each player’s Tribunal token on the Reputation track at –3: every astronomer starts there.
Make a supply of Quadrant tokens, dice and Inquisitor figures beside the board. Dice are limited (10 of each colour); Quadrants and Inquisitors are not.
[Moon] Right of the board, lay the nine Moon tiles dark side up in a 3 × 3 square, using the Roman numerals I–IX so the picture forms the Moon.
[Moon] Shuffle the nine Scoring tiles face down. Put three face up on the left column of the Moon and the other six face down on the rest.
[Moon] Stand one Grand Inquisitor on each Moon tile.
[Moon] Put the Bonus Board below the Moon, side A or B at random.
[Moon] Stack the nine Moon Observation tiles in number order, #5 on top down to #13 at the bottom, next to the Moon.
[Moon] Put the Moon Achievement tile over the deck table to the left of the university.
[Moon] With 1 or 2 players you may cover the four unused purple Book of Comets pages with the comet book tile.

Solo: Tycho Brahe

Put Tycho’s Character Board on the table.
Next to it, put a spare player board folded in half, telescope side down.
Put Tycho’s special Book token over all four library spaces of that board.
Put the Comet and Constellation tokens of another colour on Tycho’s board.
Give Tycho three dice of random colours. Their values never matter to him.
Lay Tycho’s five solo Action tiles in a row in any order, blue side up, and put his telescope below the leftmost.
Lay Tycho’s five solo Action tiles plus the Luna Action tile in a row in random order, blue side up, and put his telescope below the leftmost.
Shuffle Tycho’s Movement tiles into a face-down deck.
[Moon] Pick a difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, Flaming) and build Tycho’s movement deck from the six tiles that level lists on the Luna page, mixing base and Luna tiles.
Put Tycho’s University tokens on the stairs, his Tribunal token at –3 and his Score token on 0, as for a player.

Each player

Take a player board with its telescope. The telescope starts on the upper of the two crossed-out spaces at the bottom of the starry sky.
Choose an astronomer and put his Character Board left of your player board, special ability side up (the solo game always uses it).
Take one die of each colour — red, yellow, blue — at value 1 and put them in the top-left corner of your board.
Put your six Action tiles on the starry sky, light side up — at random, or in an order you choose.
Put your four Book tokens on the starting spaces right of your library.
Put your seven Comet tokens on the comet spaces, side 1 up.
Put your seven Constellation tokens on the constellation spaces.
Keep your four Achievement tokens beside your Character Board.
[Moon] Take a fifth Achievement token in your colour.
[Moon] Advanced game: the four Luna astronomers (Newton, Hevelius, Cunitz, Sophia Brahe) can be chosen too; set up their pieces as on the Luna page.
