Luna (Moon) expansion

The Luna expansion for Galileo Galilei: observing the Moon and its phases, Scoring tiles, Grand Inquisitors, the Bonus Board, the Moon objective and the new solo tiles.

Short tag: [Moon]

Luna adds the Moon as a new Major Object that reveals itself in three phases, the tougher Grand Inquisitors, a Bonus Board, a fifth objective and four new astronomers (Luna characters). Base-game and Luna astronomers mix freely.

Setup changes

The Moon set up beside the game board

  1. Put the Tier II Dividing tile on the first Tier II card and the Tier III one on the first Tier III card as you build the deck.
  2. Lay the 9 Moon tiles dark side up in a 3 × 3 square right of the board (numerals I–IX).
  3. Shuffle the Scoring tiles face down; put three face up on the left column.
  4. The other six go face down on the rest of the Moon.
  5. One Grand Inquisitor on each Moon tile.
  6. The Bonus Board below the Moon, random side up.
  7. The Moon Observation tiles stacked #5 on top to #13 at the bottom.
  8. The Moon Achievement tile over the deck table left of the university.
  9. Everyone takes a fifth Achievement token.

With 1–2 players you may cover the four unused Book of Comets pages with the comet book tile.

Observing the Moon

The Moon is a new choice for the Observe Observe action. Its cost is the number on the top Moon Observation tile, and you must pay it with dice of all three colours (comets can still lower it). Pick any Moon tile with a face-up Scoring tile, from any phase revealed so far.

  1. Pay the cost; take the top Moon Observation tile and keep it by your board. The next tile shows the new cost.
  2. Take the Moon tile’s observation reward.
  3. Score the Scoring tile’s bonus; every other player scores its basic points.
  4. Put the tile’s Grand Inquisitor on the leftmost space of your cellar.
  5. Return the Scoring tile to the box and flip the Moon tile to its light side.

Layout of the setup picture: I, II, III across the top row, so the left column is I, IV, VII. Check the rewards against your tiles.

Phases of the Moon

The Moon starts in phase 1 with its left column face up. When a Dividing tile is revealed from the deck (start of Tier II, then of Tier III), flip the next column of Scoring tiles face up and box the Dividing tile. Older columns stay available.

Grand Inquisitors

A Grand Inquisitor Grand Inquisitor sits in your cellar like any Inquisitor, with two differences:

For the Inquisitor subject, scoring tiles and end-game penalties it counts as one ordinary Inquisitor.

Bonus Board side B

Moon objective

Once you have observed the Moon twice, put an Achievement token on the shared Moon Achievement tile and take 3 points or 2 Quadrant token. The reward never shrinks, however many players are there before you.

The Moon Achievement tile with tokens

End of the game

Luna changes nothing about the end of the game or the final scoring.

Solo changes

Tycho gets 5 new Movement tiles and 1 new Action tile. Put the Action tile in a random spot among his five (a row of six). Choose a difficulty and shuffle its six Movement tiles:

DifficultyMovement tiles
Easy2 (stop) · 2 + gain 2 Inquisitors · 3 · 1 · 4 (Moon stop) · 0 (upgrade, lecture, comet)
Normal2 (stop) · 2 (stop) · 3 · 1 · 4 (Moon stop) · 0 (upgrade, lecture, comet)
Hard2 (stop) · 2 (stop) · 3 + die (stop) · 1 · 4 (Moon stop) · 0 (upgrade, lecture, comet)
Flaming2 (stop) · 2 (stop) · 3 + die (stop) · 1 + 2 dice · 4 (Moon stop) · 0 (upgrade, lecture, comet)

(Read from the rulebook picture: “stop” = stops early on an upgraded tile; bonuses come first.)

New tileEffect
4 (Moon)Move 4; stop early on the Moon Action tile
0Upgrade the current tile or the nearest to the right, then Lecture and Spot a comet
3 + dieGain a die, then move 3; stop early on an upgraded tile

Tycho's Luna Action tile

Tycho’s Moon tile (6A): two unpersuaded → 4 Persuades, 3 VP · two dice and a revealed Moon tile → observe the Moon, then move a comet, take a card, 10 VP and Book +1 · bottom: two dice, a Lecture, an Inquisitor, 3 VP. Observing, Tycho pays two dice, picks the Moon tile whose Scoring tile gives him most, scores only its points (no other rewards), then its bonus — you score the basic points — and puts the Grand Inquisitor on the leftmost Bonus Board space with no reward. He never keeps Grand Inquisitors in his cellar.
