Common mistakes

  • Paying for a different action with the lantern the tile just gave you — the lantern must be yours before you pick up the tile. Ruling · Rule
  • Choosing a blocked tile just to take 3 blueberries — a blocked tile cannot move, so it cannot be chosen. Ruling · Rule
  • Cutting a die with sawblade tokens alone — every sawing starts by flipping a sawing tile. Ruling · Rule
  • Sawing, splicing or gluing a die still in a pot — harvest it to your lumber pile first. Ruling · Rule
  • Taking both a public contract and the blueberries and points of a hazelnut order — it is one or the other. Ruling · Rule
  • Letting only the hazelnut counter earn the tool and 3-point lines — both income counters do. Ruling · Rule

When a tile I take moves the saw into a new quadrant, do I get the bonus shown before or after the saw turns?

Before. You gain the bonus of the space your tile starts on (on the wheel edge and in the saw window), then move the tile, turning the saw if the tile crosses the arrow, then do the action.

When is the arc tile removed?

As soon as the starting quadrant is empty — when the last action tile leaves it. From then on the bonuses under it count.

What does the bonus with a scrapwood cube, a 3 and a curved arrow give?

How exactly does blocking work? Official

Think of the green line on the central saw: a tile may cross it only when the quadrant it would move into is empty, and then the saw turns so the line stays just ahead of the leading tile.

Can I choose a blocked tile if I have no lantern, and just take 3 blueberries? Official

No. Without a lantern you cannot use a blocked action at all; a blocked tile cannot be chosen because it cannot move. Choose an unblocked tile instead — you can still take 3 blueberries instead of its action.

Where does a tile go if the next quadrant's last space is taken? Official

That cannot happen: a tile is only ever as far down a quadrant as the number of tiles that have passed through it. A tile that has run ahead so that the next quadrant is still occupied is at the front and cannot move.

Must the action tiles always start in the top-right quadrant?

Only in your first game; afterwards you may start in any quadrant for variety.

Can I do free actions in the middle of my main action — buy one die, complete an order, then buy the second die? Official

Yes. Free actions may be done at any point of your turn, also between the parts of a main action. The same goes for buying two materials and taking two orders, and for both halves of Produce / Plant a Tree.

Can I use a lantern I gain from the tile's own bonus, or from a production that bonus triggers, to do a different action? Official

No. The lantern must be yours before you pick up the tile. Gaining one first — for example by completing an order as a free action — and then spending it is fine.

Can a lantern from the wheel bonus count toward the 3 lanterns of a bonus action?

Yes. The restriction only covers the 1-lantern different action; for a bonus action you may use a lantern you just gained, together with two you already had.

Can my bonus action be the same action as my main action, and when do I do it?

The first printing says to discard helpers and orders after rounds 4 and 12. Which rounds are right?

Follow the income board: the X cards go after the first and third income phases (rounds 4 and 10 with four players, 4 and 11 with fewer), and the second income phase replaces everything with the late-game decks. The January 2023 rulebook prints "after rounds 4 and 10 (11)".
