The 2010 Reserve
What the Vinhos Deluxe Reference Book says about the box's second rule set, the 2010 Reserve: its setup, Magnate actions and multipliers, Wine Experts, the changes from the first edition and two variants.
Short tag: [Reserve]
The Deluxe box holds two games on the two sides of the board: the Special Vintage 2016 covered by this guide, and the 2010 Reserve — the first edition of Vinhos with small balance changes. The 2010 Reserve has its own rulebook, which this guide does not cover; this page lists what the shared Reference Book says about it, so you can see how the two differ. The 2016 rules on the other pages do not apply where this page differs.
How the 2010 Reserve differs
| Topic | 2010 Reserve | Special Vintage 2016 |
|---|---|---|
| Player board | 4 Estates | 5 Estates |
| Money | A Bank account (Banco do Vinho) with investments, plus cash in hand | Cash only |
| Wine Experts | Use as many as you like per turn; hold at most 6 | One per turn; no limit |
| Fair | Feature markers and Fair tiles score the wine’s features | Fair Points equal the Wine Value |
| Magnates | Barrels move between action and multiplier spaces on the board | Magnate Action and Multiplier tiles |
| Farmers | Only 4, from Ribatejo | 9–16 on the board |
| Vintage tile year 1 | The “0” tile | A random tile |
Setup for the 2010 Reserve
The Reference Book’s setup (pp. 6–8) follows the same numbered steps as the 2016 one, with these changes. The starting position bonus is paid once to each player, not again for each later Vineyard choice (FAQ):
- Board with the 2010 Reserve side up; player boards 2010 side up (4 Estates).
- Each player takes 8 barrels, 9 discs, an Action Marker and 5 Fair tiles of their colour.
- Vintage tiles — set the “0” tile aside, shuffle the rest face down and put the “0” tile face up on top: it is the first year.
- Fair — a Feature marker on the bottom space of each of the four feature columns; Fair Scoring markers on 0.
- Banco do Vinho — an Account marker on 5 of the Bank Account and an Investment marker on +1 of the Investment Bar. All purchases are paid in cash.
- Bagos — 10 each in cash.
- Workers — Enologists 7/10/12 (2/3/4 players); only 4 Farmers, on Ribatejo or beside the Enologists.
- Cellars 5/7/9, Wineries 8/12/16 (2/3/4 players).
- Regions 7/8/9 as in 2016, with the same first-game suggestion.
- Initial Vineyard — you pay its price in cash. Then the turn order changes: players who chose a lower-numbered region move ahead (ties keep their order). Finally the 2nd player gets +1 Bago (+2 in a 2-player game), the 3rd +2 and the 4th +3.
Magnate actions in the 2010 Reserve
On your turn in the Actions phase — before moving, or before or after your action — you may discard 1 wine to move one of your barrels from a Magnate space or an Additional Action space to a different Additional Action space on the same row, and take that action. You may use one such benefit per turn; Bank actions can invest as many steps as you can pay. FAQ, FAQ.
| Row | Spaces |
|---|---|
![]() | Anabela: 1 — buy 1 Winery for 1 Bago; 2 — take a Sales action |
![]() | Bruno: 3 — buy 1 Vineyard for 2 Bagos less; 4 — take an Export action |
![]() | Carolina: 5 — hire 1 Wine Expert free; 6 — move your Investment marker 1 space right free |
Magnate multipliers in the 2010 Reserve
Instead, discard 1 wine to move a barrel to an empty Multiplier slot (one barrel per slot, at most one slot of each Multiplier). It stays there unless a Wine Expert moves it.
| Multiplier | Effect |
|---|---|
![]() | End: 4 / 2 VP per Cellar |
![]() | End: 4 / 2 VP per Enologist |
![]() | End: 4 / 2 VP per Estate with all 3 slots filled |
![]() | End: 2 / 1 VP per Vineyard |
![]() | End: 1 / ½ VP per Bago in cash (divest first if you like); at most 16 VP FAQ |
![]() | End: 2 / 1 VP per Winery |
![]() | Now: discard 1 more wine and score its Quality as VP FAQ |
![]() | Now: 8 VP if you have face-up Experts of all 4 features |
![]() | Now: 1 VP per Renown cube in the regions where you have Estates |
Wine Experts in the 2010 Reserve
Use as many face-up Experts as you like in your turn, flipping each one; you may hold at most 6. The retrieve-a-barrel Expert may take a barrel from a Magnate space in this version.
Changes from the first edition
The Reference Book lists what the 2010 Reserve changed from the original Vinhos:
- Starting order follows the regions of the initial Vineyards; lower region numbers go first.
- The first player starts with one Bago fewer, the fourth with one more.
- A new region, Ribatejo, brings 4 Farmers and one more region for every player count.
- The number of Enologists depends on the player count.
- Fewer Export slots in the 2-player game.
- With 2 players the Fair awards the 1st and 3rd place VP.
- The money multiplier is capped at 16 VP.
2010 Reserve variants
- Maintenance variant — in Maintenance, each player in turn order must take the “retrieve pairs of barrels from local establishments” action if they can, but never more than one pair.
- 5 Estates variant — play the 2010 rules on the 2016 side of the player board, with its fifth Estate: take the 10th disc of your colour for that Estate’s Region Marker (10 discs instead of 9).
