Game Sequence
Five development phases from 1840 to 1860, with administration, elections and the canal phase between them.
The phases
The game sequence box on the right of the board tracks the phases with the game sequence marker.
| Year | After the development phase |
|---|---|
| 1840 | Administration |
| 1845 | Administration, then city council (1st election) |
| 1850 | Administration and the canal phase |
| 1855 | Administration, then city council (2nd election) |
| 1860 | Administration (first two steps only), city council (3rd election, first two steps only), then final scoring |
In each development phase, players take turns in the order of play until everyone has passed.
Administration phases
After each development phase, everyone does these steps together. After 1860, do only the first two.
- Traders: gain 1
for each of your traders in the three export agencies. - Income: keep the cash you did not spend and add the round’s amount plus your income level (below).
- Move ships: move every scheduled ship into its destination section, then draw new scheduled ships (below).
- New order of play: the passing track order becomes the order of play (top marker goes to 1st).
- Clean up the local market: take back your goods markers from it.
- New services: return the service tokens left on the service tokens board to the box and draw 3 new ones (2 with 2 players).
Income
Add the amount for the year and player count, then the £ shown under your income marker:
| After | 2 players | 3 players | 4 players |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1840 | £8 | £7 | £6 |
| 1845 | £7 | £7 | £6 |
| 1850 | £7 | £6 | £5 |
| 1855 | £6 | £6 | £5 |
| 1860 | £0 | £0 | £0 |
You can never hold more than £12; anything above it is lost.
Moving ships
Move each ship from the scheduled ships section to the top space of its destination section, pushing the ships already there down one space. A ship pushed off the bottom space is unloaded at once.
Then draw new scheduled ships:
