Tips & Strategy
How to teach Mombasa, first-game advice, managing resting decks, investing versus expanding, the personal tracks and player counts — with the videos they come from.
Advice, not rules: where a video and the rulebook differ, the rulebook wins.
How to teach
- Start with the final sum: cash, shares × uncovered coins, and the two personal tracks. Every action feeds one of them.
- Then the round’s three phases, and the six actions card type by card type: goods, expansion, bookkeeper, diamond merchant, bonus marker, ending your phase — the order used by Before You Play and The Crabby Dice.
- Spend real time on resting decks: a card played into a slot comes back only with the rest of that deck (Before You Play).
- Say early that nobody owns a company (Peaky Boardgamer).
First game
- Use the fixed setup: tracks A1–D1 and the four first-game starting tiles (JestaThaRogue recommends it too).
- Use a bookkeeper before spending the goods or expansion cards its books need (The Crabby Dice).
- A book asking for “4 units of one good” means one type: 2 bananas + 2 coffee does not count — a slip Before You Play own up to in their review.
- Before placing a card, look at the resting deck above the slot: is that the deck you want to pick up soon?
- Keep cash for capital calls: a marker that cannot pay stops in front of the call.
Strategy
- Resting decks. Plan about three rounds ahead: group cards you want back together in one slot, and park cards you will not need for a while in a deck you will pick up late (Before You Play). Removing weak starting cards on the bonus space thins your cards and pays.
- Invest or expand? Companies are shared. Expanding a company raises everyone’s shares in it; expanding a rival company can oust posts and hurt a leader’s holdings (Chairman of the Board). Track shares are public, share cards in hand are not — expanding a company where you clearly lead on the track is safer (Justin and Max Games).
- Do not fall in love with one company. Piggy-back on what others expand (Before You Play).
- Special spaces. Reaching them first unlocks bonus spaces only you can use for a while, and each later arrival pays you again (Stonemaier Games).
- Personal tracks. The diamond track is steady; the bookkeeping track is a puzzle that can pay hugely if your books’ needs line up so a bookkeeper jumps several at once. Pushing both fully is rarely efficient (Before You Play). Both open an extra action slot — early is better (Peaky Boardgamer).
- Card display. Better cards bring bigger goods, more helmets and extra shares; buying from the display matters (Chairman of the Board).
Player counts
- With 2 players each tends to adopt a company with little overlap; 3 and 4 players crowd the map, the majorities and the bonus tiles (Before You Play). Peaky Boardgamer prefers 4.
- Two players get 3 bonus markers each instead of 2 (setup).
Videos versus the rulebook
- In a 3-player game the round track takes 2 coins on spaces 2, 4 and 6 and 1 coin on 3, 5 and 7; The Crabby Dice mentions only the stacks of 2.
- Book piles are sorted by letter (A, B, C), not by colour.
Host game
Start with the final share calculation, then demonstrate a planned card and the resting slot above it. On turns 1–3, ask which face-up cards a book will need before the player spends them. Check the requirements without choosing their company investment or sequence for them.
Rehearse a four-unit book
Put a book requiring four units of one good in front of the ink jar. A face-up combination of 2 bananas and 2 coffee does not meet it: the requirement is a single type. Compare that with 4 bananas face up, which does meet it.
Then use those bananas for a goods action and turn the cards face down. They no longer satisfy the book. To use the goods for both checks in the same round, resolve the Bookkeeper first while the required cards are still face up, then spend the goods on a later action. Bookkeeping.
