Tutorial, Technology and Characters
Forestry's ways to play: the tutorial technology table, the A and B technology tiles, the advanced game with four characters, and the setup cards promo.
Tutorial version
For a first game, leave the technology tiles in the box and use the technology table printed on each player board. Each technology upgrade gives a one-time reward instead of a permanent one.
When you gain a technology upgrade, put a cube on any free space of the printed table and take its reward:
- use any building in any sawmill area, or
- 1 wood token of any type, or
- a task card and 2 coins.
The third and fifth spaces sit between two rewards: choose either.
You may combine the tutorial table with the advanced game.
Technology tiles
In the standard game each player has a technology tile. Everyone plays the same side, A or B, agreed before the game.
Each technology upgrade puts a cube on one free space: the right side gives a one-time reward, the left side a permanent upgrade.

| Side A — permanent upgrades | |
|---|---|
| Harvester moves | After moving the harvester, gain 1 |
| Water structure built | After building a water structure, gain 2 stars and 2 VP |
| Storage unlocked | After unlocking a storage space, gain 1 star and a task card |
| Contract fulfilled | After fulfilling a contract, gain 1 coin and 1 star |

| Side B — permanent upgrades | |
|---|---|
| Harvester moves | Move up to 3 spaces, and crossing rivers is free |
| Water track advanced | After advancing the water structures track, use any sawmill building |
| Manager moves | Take HQ rewards as if your manager were alone on the tile |
| Building placed | After a forest building or a sawmill upgrade, gain 1 coin and 1 star |
The one-time rewards on the right of each side are pictured on the tiles; check them against your tiles.
Advanced game
Play with characters: each player uses side B of the player board, which shows a character with a special ability. Choose characters, or deal them at random. The advanced game lasts 9 rounds — use 9 game round tokens. In solo, add the 3 advanced forester cards.
Trade specialist
Wants many kinds of wood.
- Setup: put the 5 reward tokens in random order under the portrait, one for each wood type.
- Ability: after fulfilling a contract, gain the bonus of the bright reward token of each wood type the contract needed, then flip those tokens dark. Two woods of the same type still give that bonus once.
- Free action, once a turn: flip all dark reward tokens bright again and score the victory points shown above them for the number flipped.
Forest ecologist
Watches life in the den trees.
- Setup: put the den tree board beside the player board and the 15 life tokens (5 blue, 5 yellow, 5 red) face down nearby, shuffled.
- Ability: each time an action reaches a feather symbol on the board (building, reforesting, water structures track) or the star token passes space 3 of the reward track, flip a life token and, after the action, place it on the den tree board.
- The first token goes anywhere; each later one must connect by a line to a placed token. A colourless space always gives its reward; a coloured space gives it only to a token of that colour — otherwise score 1 VP and place the token face down.
- The den tree board is a hard limit: once full, no more life tokens.
Logistics manager
Keeps a tidy storage.
- Setup: storage extension tiles go on the three right-hand spaces as usual.
- Ability: whenever a wood token or an adjustment token goes into storage, gain the reward printed under that space. Rewards come back each time a space is emptied and filled again. Locked spaces give nothing until unlocked.
- Exchanging a wood for another gives no reward; only new wood does. The starting wood gives none.
Monitoring specialist
Maps the forest with drones.
- Setup: put 1 data token on every forest space. Take the token of your harvester’s starting space.
- Ability: whenever your harvester enters a space with a data token — also passing through — take the token.
- Free action, once a turn: return up to 5 data tokens to the box for the reward shown on the computer picture.
Setup cards promo
A printable promo of 12 setup cards (SC1–SC12) replaces player setup step 16. Shuffle them, draw two, and keep one: take the resources and coins it shows for your seat in turn order, instead of 3/4/4/5 coins and 1 seedling. The exact goods on each card are printed as icons — check them on the cards.
