Gameplay and Player Board
How a round of Forestry works: game round tokens, action points, free actions, the player board, stars and the reward track, the development track, resources, coins and storage.
Forestry lasts 10 rounds (9 in the advanced game). Each round, every player takes one turn, spending action points on the harvester in the forest and the sawmill manager on the outer ring.
A round
- Game round token. Before the first player’s turn, the first player turns the top game round token of the stack and everyone gets its effect at once (list below).
- Turns. Clockwise from the first player, each player takes a full turn: spend action points until none are left, then the next player goes. Turn order never changes.
- Next round. When everyone has played, the first player reveals the next round token.
After the last round token is revealed, each player takes one final turn and the game ends (End of the game).
Action points
You start with 3 action points a turn. Your development track shows how many you have; at the start of each turn you have that many again.
- Each action costs 1 or 2 action points. Move your action token down the action point track as you spend them — it shows what is left.
- Use your harvester and your sawmill manager in any order, as long as you have the points.
- Bonus action points: up to 2 a turn, at 4 coins each (a free action).
- An action point gained mid-turn from the development track can be used straight away.
The cost of every action is on the reference tiles.
Free actions
Free actions cost no action points. During your turn you may:
| Free action | How often | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh contracts | Any number of times | Pay |
| Use a task card | Once a turn | Discard a task card for its top effect, then put it under the task deck (Task cards) |
| Buy an action point | Up to twice | Pay 4 coins, move your action token up 1 space |
| Build a storage section | Up to 3 times | Pay the coins on the leftmost locked storage space and take its reward (Storage) |
The player board

- Storage (top left) — your wood tokens; 2 spaces open, 3 to build. Storage
- Action point track (left edge) — points left this turn. Action points
- Development track — your action points and technology upgrades. Development track
- Technology table — a technology tile, or the printed tutorial table. Technology tiles
- Reward track — the star circle. Stars and the reward track
- Buildings track — 6 building tokens and their end-game points. Forest buildings
- Forestry table — forester tokens you collect. Tending the forest
- Reforestation table — the seedlings you plant. Reforestation
- Water structures track — your two water structures and the river token multiplier. Water structures
Stars and the reward track
Stars come from harvesting, reforesting, rewards and tokens. For each star, move your
star token one space clockwise around the reward track.
- When your star token passes the top space (7 stars make a full lap), move the cube in the middle of the track to one of the two other rewards — the cube must move, so you never take the same reward twice running. You get it after finishing your current action.
- Instead of moving the cube you may take 3 victory points.
- You always move the full number of stars; you don’t have to stop on the top space.
| Reward | What you get |
|---|---|
| Advance one space on your development track | |
| A task card (face-up or top of the deck), any 2 resource tokens and | |
| 4 coins and any wood adjustment on a wood in your storage |
Development track
Each time you advance on the development track, move its cube one space right. Each space gives
either a technology upgrade
or one more action point a turn, as printed.
- The first advance never gives an action point: it gives a technology upgrade.
- Technology upgrade: put one of your spare cubes on any free space of your technology tile — a permanent upgrade on the left side or a one-time reward on the right (Technology tiles). In the tutorial game you use the printed table and take one of three one-time rewards.
Resources and coins
| Token | Used for |
|---|---|
| Forest buildings, sawmill upgrades, the reservoir with bridge | |
| Forest buildings, sawmill upgrades, the meander | |
| Reforestation — planted seedlings stay on your board | |
| Crossing rivers, storage, bonus action points, upgrade costs |
Any resource token can be spent as 1 coin, at any time; coins never replace resources. You may keep coins and resources on your board’s character picture.
Storage
Your storage holds your wood tokens, one per space. It starts with 2 open spaces; the three on the right are covered by storage extension tiles I, II and III.
- Unlock them from left to right as a free action, paying 5, 6 and 7 coins.
- Each one gives a reward: I any 1 resource; II any 1 wood token or any 1 forester token from the supply; III one step up the water structures track.
- Storage full? You may discard a wood token to make room for a new one — rarely worth it.
Game round tokens
| Kind | Effect |
|---|---|
| Brown tokens (5) | Every player gains what is shown: 1 construction material, 1 temp worker, 1 seedling, 2 coins, or a random task card from the deck |
| Green tokens (5, one per tree species) | The first player flips one harvest token of that species to its dark side, if possible, then every player gains 1 coin |
Green tokens flip a fixed harvest token: the order is printed on page 21 of the rulebook, so you can plan for it — it flips the token even under a harvester. Pictures of each token: Cards & Components.
