Tips & Strategy
How to teach Ark Nova, first-game advice, appeal versus conservation, which cards to upgrade, money, partner zoos, breaks, player counts and solo — advice, not rules.
Advice only: where anything here differs from the rules pages, the rulebook wins.
How to teach
- Goal first, then the action row. Open with the two tracks running towards each other: appeal for income, conservation to win, and the end when they meet. Then show the five Action cards and how a used card drops to slot 1 — with one concrete move. Teach the Game follows that order.
- Then the five actions at side I, the break, and the upgrades. Leave side II details until someone upgrades.
- Everyone on Map A in a first game, and use the publisher’s suggested starting hands or the rulebook’s advice (1–2 Sponsors, 2–3 cheap Animals you can play early).
First game
- Get one or two cheap small animals out early. They raise appeal, and appeal is your income at every break (Zatu Games, r/boardgames first-game thread).
- Aim at a low level of a Base Conservation Project early: reaching 2 conservation points gives your first upgrade or worker (Zatu Games, r/ArkNova strategy thread).
- Don’t hoard big animals. Elephants and rhinos cost a lot and block your 3-card hand limit at the break (The Ultimate Ark Nova Strategy Guide, r/boardgames).
- Remember the X-token action. The designer calls it an important action, for beginners who are stuck and for experts setting up a big turn (FAQ).
Appeal and conservation
- Appeal pays now; conservation wins. Build income with animals first, then turn hard towards conservation projects — a conservation point is worth roughly three appeal by the end of the game (The Ultimate Ark Nova Strategy Guide; Erik Twice’s article on scoring).
- Supporting a project at a low level is often fine: it moves you up the Conservation track to its bonuses and unlocks the income spaces on your map (rulebook tip, p. 15).
Upgrades
- Build is the usual first upgrade: side I builds one building per action, side II several, plus the big special enclosures and the upgrade spaces (The Ultimate Ark Nova Strategy Guide, r/ArkNova).
- Association (donations, several tasks) or Cards (reputation range, snapping from strength 3) next.
- Sponsors is often upgraded last, unless a strong Sponsor in hand needs it (Zatu Games).
Money, reputation and partners
- Money is the tight resource early: place kiosks where several buildings will touch them.
- Reputation widens the cards you can reach in the display and gives bonuses along the track.
- Partner zoos: the strategy guide rates Asia and the Americas highest, because more animals come from there (The Ultimate Ark Nova Strategy Guide). A second partner zoo or university is also an upgrade.
Breaks
Call a break when it hurts the others more than you: when they still have workers on their notepads, more than 3 cards in hand, or have not yet set up their income (The Ultimate Ark Nova Strategy Guide, r/ArkNova).
Player counts
- 2 players: the community’s favourite — quick turns, little waiting.
- 3 players: a good balance of display movement and competition for partner zoos and projects.
- 4 players: the most competition for the Association board, but long waits and long games for new players (r/boardgames threads, The Ultimate Ark Nova Strategy Guide).
Solo
- Support many projects — 5 or more — since no one blocks the spaces (r/ArkNova solo thread, Meeple, PhD).
- Take the free 2-space enclosure reward when a project offers it: it saves a Build action (r/ArkNova solo thread).
- Release projects are strong alone: no one else can follow you onto them (r/ArkNova solo thread).
- With only 27 turns, avoid turns that score nothing (Solo Game).
