Expansion: Marine Worlds
Sea animals and aquariums, Reef Dwellers, the wave icon, the new universities, alternate Action cards and the extra Bonus tile on the Reputation track.
Marine Worlds brings sea animals
and two aquariums to house them, a new kind of
university, 4 alternate versions of every Action card, and more Zoo cards, Final Scoring cards and Bonus
tiles. Short tag: [Marine]. On the Setup page, tick Play with Marine Worlds for the changed steps.

Before your first game
The box also holds replacements for base-game pieces: 18 cards (001, 003, 005, 008–011, 101, 102, 131, 207, 208, 225–227, 250, 261, 262), the five Action cards, the Association board and the “play a Sponsor card from hand by paying money” Bonus tile. Swap the old ones out. Some cards changed strength; others only change an icon: the old “all animal types” icon did not include sea animals, so the new cards use a “different animal types” icon instead (and a matching “different continents” icon). The new Action cards work like the old ones, with shorter text (and aquariums added to Build).
New cards carry the expansion symbol beside their name, so you can sort them out again. The replaced cards can stay in when you play without the rest of the expansion — see the FAQ.
Setup changes
- Reputation track: 1 extra random Bonus tile face up beside space 15 (how it works).
- Association board: the new one, with the generic university on its space and the 6 animal universities beside the board.
- Alternate Action cards: right after taking your zoo map, draft 2 of them (draft); then lay out your Action cards as usual, Animals in slot 1.
- Pieces: use the expansion’s track counters and its 7 animal-shaped player tokens at the left edge of your map.
Sea animals

Sea animals are a new animal category
. Some belong to a second category too (the Sand
Tiger Shark is also a predator
).
Aquariums
| Picture | Aquarium |
|---|---|
![]() | Large aquarium — 5 spaces. It is an enclosure, not a water space on the zoo map. FAQ |
![]() | Small aquarium — 2 spaces. It is an enclosure, not a water space on the zoo map. FAQ |
- Both are special enclosures: one of each per zoo, built with Build side I — no upgrade needed.
- Each must be built next to water
. Its water icon then counts as a water icon in your
zoo (for projects and Sponsors), but it is not a water space for other buildings or animals. - They don’t have to touch each other.
Housing a sea animal
Most sea animals live only in aquariums: their standard enclosure size is printed in red. That number only tells you whether the animal is small or large.
- The aquarium number on the card is how many player tokens you place. You may split them between your small and large aquarium.
- A rock or water need applies to every aquarium you use for it.
- Some animals may use an aquarium or the Reptile House: all their tokens go in one kind, never mixed.
- A rare few may also use a standard enclosure (their size is printed in the normal colour).
When you build an aquarium or the Reptile House you may move one of these animals across, as in the base game. Moving an animal out of a standard enclosure follows the release order: tokens on a special enclosure first, a standard enclosure only if that is impossible.
Reef Dwellers
About half the sea animals are Reef Dwellers, with a coral icon and an effect on the right of the card. Whenever you play a Reef Dweller, every Reef Dweller in your zoo triggers its effect again, including the one just played. Text with a coral icon in front explains a new Reef Dweller effect; text without it is an ordinary animal ability. Resolve them all in any order (“after finishing” effects still wait until the end of the action).
The wave icon
Every sea animal and some Sponsors show a wave under the name band. It does nothing when the card is played. Whenever a card with a wave is added to the display while refilling, discard the card in folder 1, slide the rest down and refill again — one discard per wave revealed. Ignore waves at setup.
The new universities
Using the Association university task (value 4
) you may take one of the 6 animal
universities instead of a normal one, if the generic university is still on the Association board
and you don’t have a new university yet. Take the one with the animal icon you want, put it on your map,
and move the generic university beside the board: nobody else can take a new university until it goes back
in the next break. So each player gets at most one, and choice shrinks as they go.
A new university gives:
- 1 icon of its animal category in your zoo;
- a card: reveal from the deck until a card with that animal icon (Animal or Sponsor), take it and tuck the others under the deck in order;
- 1 research icon
.
Alternate Action cards
Each of the five actions has 4 alternate cards (numbered 1–4 in the colour band; the standard ones show 0). Some add a small bonus, some change a value (Build at strength X+1), some lose a cost or gain an extra when upgraded. Where you draw or play cards from is now shown above the name band. Every card, both sides, is pictured and summarised on Cards & Components.
Draft at personal setup, right after taking your zoo map: everyone gets 3 at random, keeps 1 and passes 2 left, keeps 1 of the 2 received and passes the last left. Of your 3, discard 1 and use 2 of different actions in place of your standard cards. Ending with 3 of the same action: draw 1 random card of another action and use it with 1 of yours. Solo: draw 3, keep 2 of different actions.
The Bonus tile on the Reputation track
Once your counter is on 15 and you gain more reputation, each further step may take this Bonus tile (while it is there) or give 1 appeal as usual. Leave it and someone else can take it later.
New animal abilities
Marine Worlds also adds abilities such as Mark, Adapt, Shark Attack, Cut Down and Extra Shift; Zoo Map Pack 2 explains the ones its maps reuse, and the expansion’s Glossary explains all of them.
Solo play
The solo tile (also in newer base boxes): starting at 10 or 20 appeal, put it 35 or 45 side up on the Appeal track. Sponsors with the condition “max. 25 appeal” then read max. 35 or max. 45. This applies with or without the expansion.
