The Map: Moving and Fighting

Wendake's map, Guards and Outposts, moving Warriors, transferring Natives Home and fighting, with the rulebook's own do's and don'ts.

The map

The 2-player map with Natives, Canoes and flags, numbered

  1. Field with a Woman — a Productive Area for Vegetables; one Native at most.
  2. Forest with a Hunter — a Productive Area for Beavers.
  3. A Guard — a standing Warrior outside the Productive Areas.
  4. Canoes on a Lake — the Lake does not matter in the base game.
  5. Territory border — each step crosses one; Lakes and rivers cannot be crossed.
  6. A flag — English or French territory, for the Alliance tiles.
  7. An empty forest — free for any Warrior to claim as an Outpost.

The map is built from two halves chosen by player count; solo uses the 2-player map.

Guards and Outposts

Only Warriors move. A Warrior that enters a territory is placed in one of two ways:

Moving Warriors

With a Move action or a Progress tile you have a number of steps to share among your Warriors (not Outposts). Three steps can move three Warriors one step each, or one Warrior three steps. A step can:

You may move through territories holding opponents’ Guards and stop where you like.

Movement examples: forbidden moves, a new Guard, new Outposts and a transfer

Transferring Natives

At any time during your turn — but not in the middle of an action — you may transfer any of your Outposts back to your Home and immediately replace it with a Woman or Hunter from your Home, as the Productive Area shows. You may also leave the area empty.

Fighting

Fighting only happens during a movement, when your Warrior is in a territory with another player’s Natives. Each fight is one Warrior against one Native; moving in and attacking costs one step, and a Warrior already in the territory spends a step to attack.

  1. Your Warrior against a Guard: both are injured and go to their owners’ Long Houses.
  2. Your Warrior against a Native in a Productive Area:
    • a Woman or Hunter is injured (to its Long House) and your Warrior stays there as an Outpost;
    • a Warrior (Outpost) — both are injured.
  3. Guards first: while a player has Guards in a territory, you must attack all of them before you can attack that player’s Natives in Productive Areas.

George clears Ringo's Guard, then takes the forest from his Hunter

Tribe powers change some fights: the Cayuga’s Women and the Mohawk black Warrior go Home instead of to the Long House, and the Tuscarora Hunters injure their attacker (Tribe cards).

[Allies] European Patrols fight differently: everyone involved goes Home (New Allies).
