Turns and Actions
How a turn of The Gallerist works: moving your Gallerist, leaving Assistants behind, Location actions, Executive actions, Kicked-Out actions, and Visitors in the Plaza, Lobbies and Galleries.
Overview
You run an art gallery. Over the game you discover Artists, buy their Works of Art cheaply, make them famous and sell the works at a profit, while hiring Assistants and building Reputation abroad. The player with the most money at the end wins.
Players take turns clockwise from the Starting Player. The game has no fixed number of rounds: it runs until two of three end conditions are met.
Your turn
- Move your Gallerist to a different Location — you must move if you are standing on one. If you were kicked out and are home in your Gallery, go to any Location.
- Optionally leave an Assistant behind on the Location you are leaving.
- Take one of the two actions of the new Location. You must take one if you can.
- At any point before or after the Location action, you may take one Executive Action.
Moving onto a Location occupied by another Gallerist or Assistant kicks that piece out (Kicked-out actions). The next turn is always taken by the player on the active player’s left, not by whoever was kicked out.
The four Locations
| Location | Actions |
|---|---|
Leaving an Assistant behind
When you move from one Location to another, you may put one of your Assistants on the Location space you are leaving. It can come from a desk in your office or from another Location. An Assistant left behind earns you a Kicked-out action when someone displaces it.
Executive actions
Once per turn, before or after your Location action:
Moving Visitors with tickets
Discard any number of tickets. Each one moves a Visitor of the same colour one step towards your own Gallery: from the Plaza to your Lobby, from your Lobby to your Gallery, or from another player’s Lobby to the Plaza. One Visitor may move several steps. Discarded tickets go to a discard pile beside the board, not back to the box office. A Visitor in a Gallery never leaves it by tickets.
Contract bonuses
Place one of your Assistants (from your office or a Location) on a contract card on your player board to take the bonus it shows. The bonus is taken once; the Assistant stays on the card as a reminder. When the contract is later used to sell a work, the Assistant goes home and the card is flipped, showing a new bonus you can take with another Executive Action.
Kicked-out actions
A piece that is kicked out moves to the black space in front of the Location. After the active player’s turn, the kicked-out player may take one Kicked-out action, then the piece goes home:
- Spend Influence — move your Influence disc back to the previous Fame (star) icon on the Influence track — to take one of the two actions of that Location; or
- take an Executive action.
Kicked-out actions are optional, but the piece goes home anyway. If the kicked-out Assistant is used in the action — placed on a contract card or in the International Market — it stays there instead of going home.
You may kick out your own Assistant: it simply goes home and you get no Kicked-out action.
Going home
- A kicked-out Gallerist returns to its Gallery on the game board; next turn it may go to any Location.
- An Assistant going home takes an empty desk in your office. With all four desks full, it is removed from the game.
Visitors, Galleries, Plaza and Lobbies
There are three kinds of Visitor: Investors (brown), VIPs (pink) and Collectors (white). They start in the bag, on Artists and on Works of Art, and move to the central Plaza. From there you bring them through your Lobby (the space between your Gallery and the Plaza) into your Gallery.
- Visitors in your Gallery pay off:
Influence and
money when icons say so, extra Fame from Collectors, and intermediate scoring. - Visitors in your Lobby only give access to the International Market.
Collectors rule
You may have at most 1 more Collector in your Gallery than the number of Works of Art you have sold. At the start that is 1 Collector. The symbol in each Gallery on the board is the reminder.
