Artists Colony
The Gallerist's Artists Colony: discover an Artist and take a commission, or buy and exhibit a Work of Art — prices, Fame, tickets, Signature tokens and the 4th Gallery slot.
Eight Artists are in each game: one blue and one red for each art form — painting, photography, sculpture and digital art. Only one (the first blue Artist drawn) starts face up; the others must be discovered.
Discover an Artist
Choose any face-down Artist and:
- take the bonus on its Artist bonus tile, then return the tile to the box;
- red Artists only: move the Collector on the tile to the Plaza;
- flip the Artist face up;
- put a Fame cube on the brown space of its Fame track — the initial Fame, printed on both sides of the tile;
- move one of its Signature tokens to the commission space at the bottom of the Art value track on your player board.
Discovering does not raise the Artist’s Fame.
Commissions
The Signature token on your commission space is your commission:
- the first work you buy from that Artist costs their initial Fame, however famous they have become;
- you must buy the commissioned work before any other work by that Artist;
- you may hold only one commission: while you have one you cannot discover another Artist.
Buy and exhibit a Work of Art
Each Artist can have only two unsold works in play — one per Signature token. When both tokens are taken, the Artist creates nothing more (apart from a commissioned work) until one of those works is sold.
To buy:
- Choose an Artist with a free Signature token, or whose commission you hold. The top work of that art form’s stack is the one they create.
- Move all Visitors on the work to the Plaza.
- Pay the Artist’s current Fame in money — or their initial Fame if this is your commission.
Influence can pay part of it. - Raise the Artist’s Fame by the
number on the work, +1 per Collector in your Gallery. Influence can add more. - Take the tickets shown on the work.
- Put the work face down (display side up) in the leftmost empty slot of your Gallery. No empty slot: you cannot buy.
- Move the Signature token next to your Art value track, level with the Artist’s current star rating.
- Draw random Visitors from the bag onto the work now on top of the stack: one per ticket it shows (as many as the bag has).
Your Gallery slots
- Slots 1–3 are always open. The 3rd slot holds the Reputation tile you took at the start: when you exhibit a third work, lay that tile on the work until the end of your turn, then put it on an empty Reputation space of your player board, take the bonus of that space (not of the tile) and send one Visitor from your Lobby to the Plaza. This happens once per game.
- The 4th slot is open only while you exhibit at least one Masterpiece.
Tickets on works
A ticket of one colour gives that colour; a ticket split in two colours lets you choose one of them; the striped three-colour ticket gives any colour;
two tickets marked ≠ give two different colours. You can never take two tickets of the same colour at once.
Signature tokens and the Art value track
The Signature token beside your Art value track shows what the work sells for. It follows the Artist’s star rating — the star symbol at or below the Fame cube:
| Artist’s Fame | Star rating | Sales value |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | — | 0 (no star yet; check against the physical component) |
| 2–4 | 1 green star | 5 |
| 5–7 | 2 green stars | 8 |
| 8–10 | 3 green stars | 11 |
| 11–14 | 1 gold star | 14 |
| 15–18 | 2 gold stars | 17 |
| 19 (Celebrity) | Masterpiece | 20 |
Every time an Artist’s Fame reaches a new star, every player who owns a work by them moves its Signature token up. A token on the commission space stays there until the work is bought.
