Optional cave tokens add powers that expeditions can collect and spend.

Setup changes

Use the cave-marked mountain spaces in a route and put four cave tokens face down by each. The 2017 English rules show 36 tokens across 14 distinct faces. Their effects and quantities are listed with pictures in Cards & Components. The route layout determines which mountains have caves.

Explore a cave

When a pawn ends movement adjacent to a cave, take its top token and reveal it. Passing adjacent does not count. To collect again from that cave, first stop somewhere not adjacent, then later stop adjacent again; moving between two spaces beside the same cave does not collect twice. Tokens can be spent during the current or a later turn, following the effect shown on the tile; spent tokens return to the box.
