Variants and Add-ons
Lisboa’s official variants and Kickstarter add-ons: the 2-player overlay, the starting Decrees variant, the starting task cards, the city tokens and the Decree board.
Short tag: [Add-ons]. The game’s Variants and Add-ons sheet covers one board piece of the base game (the 2-player overlay), one variant and the Kickstarter add-ons, which were also sold separately as an upgrade pack. The add-ons are not part of the base game; base-game pages mark every line that involves them with [Add-ons].
Two-player overlay

In a 2-player game (and solo) this strip covers row E of downtown during setup: no cubes go in row E, its stores and Public Building sites are out of play. Remember to return the row-E Decrees (the ones with the 2-player symbol) to the box as they come out, drawing a replacement each time. Everything else about 2 players is on Two-player changes.
Starting Decrees variant
For your first games, if the open choice feels daunting: after setup, in reverse turn order, each player takes one Decree from the display and puts it face up beside their board. Then refill the display. The Decree gives you a goal from turn one (Take a Decree).
Kickstarter add-ons
The components below came with the Kickstarter edition or the upgrade pack: 12 starting task cards, 24 round store tokens and 14 square Public Building tokens, a Decree board, a 2-player overlay, wooden pieces (8 Officials in 4 colours, Influence and score discs, price markers, a Cardinal and 4 Courtiers, the Treasury marker) and two decorated bags. Only the first three change the rules.
Starting task cards

Twelve cards that give new players a direction and a small head start against experienced ones: 4 in deck A, 8 in deck B.
- Setup: deal 1 random A card to each new player; return the other A cards to the box. Shuffle the 8 B cards face down beside the board.
- Play: when you complete the task on one of your cards, take its reward at the end of that turn and discard the card. You complete at most one task card per turn. When two deck-B cards are drawn, complete one and discard the other (FAQ).
- Deck A tasks need a visit — a Noble card played into the Royal Court (the card shows the Court symbol). Following someone else’s visit doesn’t count.
| Deck A task | Reward |
|---|---|
| 1. Visit Manuel and build a store, or visit the Marquis and build a ship | Draw 2 cards from deck B |
| 2. Visit the King and open a Public Building, or visit the Marquis and take a Decree | Draw 2 cards from deck B |
| 3. Visit Manuel and build a store, or visit the Marquis and take a Decree | Draw 2 cards from deck B |
| 4. Visit the Marquis and build a ship, or visit the King and open a Public Building | Draw 2 cards from deck B |
| Deck B task | Reward |
|---|---|
| 5. Recruit 2 Officials | Put 1 of your Officials in a Noble’s office |
| 6. Take 2 Plans | Put 1 of your Officials in a Noble’s office |
| 7. Meet the Cardinal | 3 réis |
| 8. Get a Royal Favor | 2 Influence (Clergy tile bonuses don’t apply) |
| 9. Follow another player’s visit | 2 Influence (Clergy tile bonuses don’t apply) |
| 10. Sell goods | 3 réis |
| 11. Produce goods | 1 gold |
| 12. Gain Influence at Church scoring | 2 wigs |
City tokens

They vary the rewards of the city from game to game.
- Setup: cover the printed rewards: a round token on each downtown land space and a square token on each Public Building site.
- Play: when you build a store or open a Public Building there, take the token’s reward instead of the printed one, then discard the token before placing your tile. Rewards are read as on the board (Build a Store).
The rewards on each token are printed on it — check against the physical components.
Decree board

Put it left of the gameboard with a Decree on each space and the face-down deck on the dark space. It holds the 8-card Decree display and shows at a glance how many cards to refill at the end of a turn. No rule changes.
Queen Variant
[Queen] A promo of two cards plus a rules card (BoardGameGeek, Eagle-Gryphon Games, 2020). In 1777 Queen Mariana Vitória took power and dismissed the Marquis of Pombal; in the game she takes his seat late in the second period.
| Card | What it is |
|---|---|
![]() | The Queen — covers the Marquis’ portrait. The crossed-out symbol: no more Decrees |
![]() | Noble Actions — covers the Marquis’ Noble action: Build a Store or Open a Public Building |
Pictures: the promo cards, from a BoardGameGeek photo.
- Setup: put both cards beside the board.
- Trigger: card 57 of the brown deck (1769, Pombal receives his title). When it is revealed, the current player finishes their turn as usual.
- Then put the Queen card on the Marquis’ portrait and the Noble Actions card on his Noble action.
- Return every Decree still in the deck and on the display to the box. From now on nothing gives a Decree: any effect that would simply does nothing. Decrees already taken still score.
- The Queen replaces the Marquis everywhere: Marquis cards, Marquis Royal Favors, Clergy tiles and anything else naming the Marquis now refer to her.
- Visiting the Queen: her Noble action is Build a Store or Open a Public Building, your choice. Her State actions are the Marquis’ as before.
All other rules are unchanged.
