Visit a Noble and Sponsor an Event
Lisboa’s Royal Court actions: visiting a Noble and paying Influence, following a visit with a Royal Favor, the three Noble actions — build a store, take a Decree, open a Public Building — and sponsoring an event.
Cards played into the Royal Court (the spaces above the three Nobles’ portraits) give the big actions: a Noble card visits that Noble, a Treasury card sponsors an event.
Action 3: Visit a Noble

To visit a Noble:
- Play a Noble card of that Noble from your hand into the Royal Court.
- Put your Courtier on it, so everyone knows whose turn it is if they follow.
- Spend Influence for the visit (cost below).
- You may take one of this Noble’s two State actions, without paying a good.
- You must then take the Noble’s Noble action.
If you can’t carry out the whole Noble action, you can’t visit that Noble. After the visit, the other players may follow; then take your Courtier back and discard the Noble card.
| Noble | State actions (one, free) | Noble action |
|---|---|---|
Spending Influence to visit
The cost of a Visit or a Follow is:
- the Influence modifier left of the Treasury marker (+1, 0 or −1), plus
- 1 per Official of other players (neutral ones included) in that Noble’s office — not its plaza.
A total below 0 counts as 0. If, and only if, you lack the Influence, pay the rest in
wigs, 1 wig per Influence. A board aid beside the offices repeats this formula.
Follow a Visit
After your visit, each other player who has the
Royal Favor of that Noble may
follow it, in clockwise order:
- Return the Royal Favor tile to its Noble’s stack.
- Spend Influence for the visit, as above.
- Take one of the three actions of that Noble: one State action (no good) or the Noble action.
Followers act inside your turn: the displays are not refilled and goods on the State actions still block them. Sponsored events can’t be followed.
The Noble actions
Each Noble has one big action, done when you visit him, follow him, or through some events.
Take a Decree
[Queen] With the Queen Variant, from brown card 57 on the Queen takes the Marquis’ place and nobody can take Decrees any more.
The Marquis’ action. Take one Decree from the display and put it
face up beside your board. Decrees score at the end, only for you, and there is no limit to how many
you own (Decree cards).
Extra Decree: if a Rubble Set marker of yours sits on the Marquis, you may discard it to take a second Decree — at most one marker each time you take Decrees. The display is not refilled between the two picks.
Action 4: Sponsor an Event
Play a Treasury card into the Royal Court, pay réis equal to the Treasury
value, and take the action or reward in the middle of the card. Nobody can follow an event.
| Event | Effect |
|---|---|
| Any Noble action | Build a Store, Take a Decree or Open a Public Building |
| Build or open | Build a Store or Open a Public Building |
| Officials | Move up to 4 Officials to different offices (with 4, two share an office) |
| Goods, Plans or Decrees | Take what is shown |
When the event is a Noble action you still pay its own costs: a sponsored store pays the Treasury value twice, once for the event and once in the land price.
