Learn Kutná Hora: The City of Silver
Learn the game in 5 short steps. Everything links to the full rules.
Welcome to Kutná Hora

Bohemia, around 1300. Silver has been found under a hill and a boomtown is growing on top of it. Each of you heads a wealthy family in three of the town’s six guilds. You dig mines, buy building rights, claim plots and raise buildings — and every building changes the prices for everybody.
The game lasts 5 rounds with 4 players, 6 with 2 or 3. Most points wins. Points come from:
City dots — your buildings beside matching dots;
Mine rows — the most stars in each row of the mines;
Income,
reputation and the
patricians seated on the town council.
Prices move
Nothing is stored: wood, permits, silver, ore, food and beer are prices on two card stands.
- You pay wood and permit costs in groschen at today’s price.
- You earn with the
Income action: your production of each commodity × its price. - Build a guild building → its commodity’s arm moves right → the price
falls. - Population and ore cards moving to the back → demand rises and prices change.
- A
red X: nobody may build that guild’s buildings for now.
Your turn
Each round everyone takes 3 turns: 2 cards, 2 cards, then 1. Each of your 6 cards shows two actions — pick one, and the other half is gone for the round.
| Action | In one line |
|---|---|
| Draw mine tiles, dig one, mark it with a miner | |
| Buy a building tile from the town hall board | |
| Claim a square in town, next to a building | |
| Put your tile on your plot, pay its wood | |
| Collect money; pay 10 to seat a patrician | |
| St. Barbara | Flip a pelican, take the cathedral’s current bonus |
| Any action, for 1 reputation |
End of a round
When everyone has played 5 cards:
- Pay
taxes (plus 3 or 8 for extra plots in town) — or lose the reputation printed
for the round. - In the last 3 rounds, every patrician on the council scores for everybody.
- Mid-game, the red-patrician buildings join the market.
- The starting player marker moves left; take all your cards back.
Final scoring
| Source | Points |
|---|---|
| 1 per dot on your building matching a neighbour or the board edge | |
| Each row by its total stars: 2/1/0, 3/2/1 or 5/3/2 for 1st/2nd/3rd | |
| Your income ÷ 10, rounded down — coins in hand don’t count | |
| −4 to +13 by your marker | |
| 1 per unbuilt tile, unbuilt plot and unused pelican |
Ties: most groschen left. Final scoring.
