Working 9–5
Your turn: hire, train, drive-ins, marketing campaigns, food and drinks, houses and gardens, and new restaurants — in that order.
Your turn
In turn order, each player takes one turn and uses the employees in their structure. Finish your whole turn before the next player starts. Do the steps in this order:
- Hire employees
- Train employees
- Open drive-ins
- Launch campaigns
- Prep food and drinks
- Place houses and gardens
- Place or move restaurants
Where employees sit in your structure doesn’t change this order. Claim a milestone the moment an action meets it; one action may claim several.
Hire employees
Your CEO gives 1 hire each round. Each played recruiter adds more:
| Employee | Hires |
|---|---|
CEO | 1 |
Recruiting Girl | 1 |
Recruiting Manager | 2, each a hire or a $5 salary discount |
HR Director | 4, each a hire or a $5 salary discount |
For each hire, take one entry-level employee
from the supply and put it on
the beach. Hiring is optional, but every Recruiting Manager or HR Director action you don’t use
becomes a mandatory $5 salary discount at Payday.
Train employees
Each played Trainer, Coach and Guru gives Train actions. For each one:
- Choose a training option on an employee who is on the beach (the list on their card).
- Return that employee to the supply and take one of the new type.
- Put the new employee on the beach.
| Employee | Train actions |
|---|---|
Trainer | 1 |
Coach | 2; may train the same person two steps |
Guru | 3; may train the same person three steps |
- You can train someone you hired this turn: they are on the beach.
- Different trainers may not train the same employee in one turn, unless you have the First to Pay $20 or More in Salaries milestone. One Coach or Guru may use all their actions on one person.
- You can’t train into a
1x type you already own. - Employee cards are limited: if none of a type is left, you can’t hire or train into it. Steps in between don’t need a card: hire and train at once, and only the final card must be available.
Open drive-ins
If you played a Local Manager or a Regional Manager, you must put a drive-in sign on each of your open restaurants. Until Cleanup, each of them has an entrance at all four corners: it may reach new roads, and distance is counted from whichever corner is closest.
Launch campaigns
Each played marketeer may launch one campaign for a food or drink of your choice.
| Marketeer | Campaigns | Range | Max duration |
|---|---|---|---|
Marketing Trainee | Billboard | 2 by road | 2 rounds |
Campaign Manager | Mailbox or billboard | 3 by road | 3 rounds |
Brand Manager | Airplane, mailbox or billboard | unlimited | 4 rounds |
Brand Director | Radio, airplane, mailbox or billboard | unlimited | 5 rounds |
- Choose a campaign: any free campaign of a type your marketeer allows. Its number decides when it markets: radios 1–3, airplanes 4–6, mailboxes 7–10, billboards 11–16 (lowest first).
- Place it within the marketeer’s range from one of your open restaurants’ entrances:
- Billboards, mailboxes and radios go on empty squares next to a road. A marketeer who travels by road must place it next to the road they used.
- Airplanes go outside the map, along its edge. The 1-, 3- or 5-square side lines up with exactly that many squares of the edge; it can’t stick out past a corner. Airplanes may overlap.
- Choose the item and duration: put item counters of the advertised kind on it — one per round it will run, up to the marketeer’s maximum.
- Busy marker: move the marketeer above your CEO, beside the beach, and put the matching numbered busy token on the card.
The marketeer stays busy until the campaign ends. A busy marketeer isn’t played, isn’t on the beach and can’t be trained, but you still pay their salary, and you can’t fire them unless you’re broke.
Eternal campaigns
With the First Billboard Campaign milestone, every campaign you launch from then on — the billboard that earned it included — is eternal: slot an eternal flag into it and put a single counter on it. That counter is never removed, the campaign never ends, and its marketeer stays busy for the rest of the game (with no salary).
Prep food and drinks
Take the food and drinks your employees make from the supply and put them in front of you: your stock, shared by all your restaurants and public. Gaining is optional.
| Employee | Gains |
|---|---|
Kitchen Trainee | 1 |
Burger Cook | 3 |
Burger Chef | 8 |
Pizza Cook | 3 |
Pizza Chef | 8 |
Errand Boy | 1 drink of any kind — no supplier needed |
Cart Operator | 2 drinks from each supplier on a road route, range 2 |
Truck Driver | 3 drinks from each supplier on a road route, range 3 |
Zeppelin Pilot | 2 drinks from each supplier on every tile it enters, range 4 by air |
The drinks are
soda,
lemonade and
beer, each from its own
kind of supplier.
Collecting drinks
- A road route starts at an entrance of one of your open restaurants and moves square by square along roads. You must collect from every supplier orthogonally next to the route.
- If your entrance is at the edge of a tile, reaching the road on the next tile already costs 1 range.
- A Zeppelin Pilot collects from every supplier on each tile it enters, including its starting tile, and may not enter a tile twice.
- Each supplier gives drinks to each driver only once per round, however often the route passes it. Two different drivers may both collect from the same supplier.
Place houses and gardens
Each played
New Business
Developer
does one of these, anywhere on the map:
- Place a house with a garden (any number still in the supply) on empty squares, with an edge next to a road. You may never place a house without a garden.
- Add a garden to a house that has none: on empty squares, making a 2 × 3 rectangle with the house.
A garden belongs to one house. A house with a garden holds up to 5 demand counters instead of 3, and pays double for everything it buys (Dinnertime). Houses with gardens and single gardens are limited.
Place or move restaurants
You have 3 restaurants. If all three are on the map, you can’t place another (but a Regional Manager can still move one).
| Employee | Does |
|---|---|
Local Manager | Place a new restaurant within road range 3 of one of your open restaurants’ entrances, with its entrance on a road the manager reached. It gets a Coming Soon sign and opens at the end of the round. |
Regional Manager | Place a new restaurant anywhere, open at once with a drive-in; or move one of your open restaurants anywhere (it stays open and keeps its drive-in). You may also turn it in place. |
A new restaurant covers only empty squares, with its entrance next to a road.
