The Ketchup Mechanism & Other Ideas
The expansion's modules: new districts, kimchi, sushi, noodles, coffee, lobbyists, new milestones, ketchup, fry chefs, night shift, new marketeers, movie stars, reserve prices, hard choices and six players.
Modules
The expansion is a box of independent modules: pick any you like and add them to the base game. Each changes only what it says.
| Module | In short |
|---|---|
| New Districts | New map tiles, apartments that take double demand |
| Kimchi | A side dish that wins every house |
| Sushi | Food that houses with gardens prefer |
| Noodles | Food that can replace any order |
| Coffee | Sell coffee to customers passing by |
| Lobbyists | Build roads and parks |
| New Milestones | A different milestone set |
| Ketchup | A milestone for having your demand sold by others |
| Fry Chefs | +$10 per sale |
| Night Shift Managers | Unpaid employees work twice |
| Mass Marketeers | Extra Marketing phases |
| Rural Marketeers | A huge rural house off the map |
| Gourmet Food Critics | Market to every house with a garden |
| Movie Stars | Choose turn order first, win ties |
| Reserve Prices | Reserve cards change the base price |
| Hard Choices | Early milestones disappear |
| Six Players | A sixth chain |
Employee tray changes
- New 1x employees: use 1 copy with 2–3 players, 2 with 4, 3 with 5–6.
- With Sushi, Kimchi, Coffee or Noodles: add the expansion’s extra Luxuries Manager to the tray, and swap the 12 base Kitchen Trainees for the 12 that train into any cook.
- With Rural Marketeers, Gourmet Food Critics or Mass Marketeers: swap the 12 base Marketing Trainees for the 12 expansion ones, which can train into the new marketeers.
- The 3 expansion Executive Vice Presidents are only gained through a milestone, never put in the tray.
New Districts
Shuffle the new map tiles into the base tiles and build the map as usual (with Lobbyists, use that module’s map rules). The tile with two parks is used only with Lobbyists.
- A tile with three lemonade suppliers: a cart or truck may pass one, two or all three, depending on its route; a zeppelin collects from all three.
- House 25 starts with a garden and can’t get another. The road touches it at its rounded end.
- Apartments (“Pi” and “9¾”) are houses for every rule, except:
- each counter a campaign would add becomes 2, and there is no demand limit;
- they can’t have a garden (they can benefit from a park);
- “Pi” eats between houses 3 and 4, “9¾” between 9 and 10.
- The four roads into “Pi” don’t connect to each other through it.
Kimchi

Add the Kimchi Masters (1x) and the extra Luxuries Manager.
- A played Kimchi Master must make 1 kimchi at the end of Cleanup, after unsold food is thrown away.
- Dinnertime: among the restaurants that can meet a house’s whole demand, the house goes to one whose chain also has kimchi, whatever the price or distance. If several have kimchi, normal competition decides between them.
- Serving such a house, you also sell exactly 1 kimchi at your normal price.
- Kimchi can’t be marketed. A freezer may hold up to 10 kimchi, but then nothing else.
Sushi

Add the Sushi Cooks (2 sushi), Sushi Chefs (5 sushi, 1x), sushi counters, the any-cook Kitchen Trainees and the extra Luxuries Manager.
- Only a house with a garden eats sushi: if a restaurant has at least as many sushi as the house has demand counters, of any kinds, the house eats sushi there, before any normal order.
- It replaces all the demand or none. With several such restaurants, normal competition decides.
- Sushi can’t be marketed. It counts as food for milestones and can be frozen. Parks aren’t gardens.
Noodles

Add the Noodle Cooks (6 noodles), Noodle Chefs (16 noodles, 1x), noodle counters, the any-cook Kitchen Trainees and the extra Luxuries Manager.
- Only if no restaurant can meet a house’s exact order: a restaurant with at least as many noodles as the house’s demand counters serves noodles instead, for all of them.
- Noodles can’t be marketed and can’t replace coffee. They count as food and can be frozen.
Coffee

Add the Barista Trainees (1 coffee), Baristas (2), Lead Baristas (5, 1x), coffee counters, the extra Luxuries Manager, each player’s 3 coffee shops, and the First Coffee Sold milestone.
- A coffee shop has an entrance on every side and sells only coffee. Your routes may start from it.
- Place a coffee shop when you train a Barista Trainee into a Barista or a Barista into a Lead Barista (within road range 2 of your restaurants or shops), or when you claim First Coffee Sold (anywhere, in Cleanup). Only one coffee shop per map tile. With all 3 out, you may move one instead.
- Coffee sales: when a house goes out to eat, it follows the shortest route to its restaurant and buys 1 coffee from each restaurant or shop with coffee next to that route — never from the restaurant it eats at. Buying is automatic. If several shortest routes are tied, the house takes the one with the most coffee; if still tied, it buys only from shops on all of those routes.
- Coffee is sold at your item price (gardens double it) but is not a drink. It can’t be marketed or frozen.
Lobbyists

Add the 6 Lobbyists, the roads, roadworks, parks and the First Lobbyist Used milestone. Agree which new map tiles go into the pool (all of them with 5–6 players); keep unused shuffled tiles nearby.
- Each played Lobbyist places one road or park on empty squares next to a road square within road range 2 of your entrances, after houses and before restaurants.
- A new road goes in under construction, one arrow pointing at your entrance or a road square in range; put a roadwork on each road square it points at. Passing a roadwork costs +1 distance; a road under construction can’t be used. In Cleanup the roadworks go and the road is flipped and open.
- Parks: a house next to a park pays double; a house with a garden next to a park pays triple. More than one park gives nothing extra.
- First Lobbyist Used: add one of the spare map tiles next to the map, aligned to the grid (not where an airplane or freeway sits).
New Milestones
A different milestone set on the expansion insert, used instead of the base milestones. Most require using an employee’s ability, not only playing them. “First Marketeer Used”, “First Trainer Used” and “First Recruiting Girl Used” disappear after round 2.
| Milestone | Benefit |
|---|---|
First Marketeer Used | $5 for each demand counter your marketeers’ campaigns add; distance to your restaurants −2. |
First Brand Director Used | Your radio is eternal. |
First Campaign Manager Used | That Campaign Manager places a second campaign of the same type, item and duration. |
First Brand Manager Used | Its airplane may advertise 2 different items. |
First Marketing Trainee Used | A free Kitchen Trainee and Errand Boy on the beach. |
First Burger Sold | Your CEO always has 4 slots. |
First Pizza Sold | For the first 3 houses buying pizza this turn, the seller places a pizza radio (2 rounds) on that house’s tile. |
First Lemonade Sold | Train working employees in place, within the same colour. |
First Beer Sold | Pay salaries with food or drink, one item per salary. |
First Cart Operator Used | Cart Operators and Zeppelins collect 4 per supplier, Truck Drivers 6. |
First Soda Sold | A freezer for 10 items. |
First Recruiting Girl Used | A free Executive Vice President, with no salary. |
First Trainer Used | A free Trainer; you never have to fire employees you can’t pay. |
First Discount Manager Used | Each round you discount by $3 or more, $100 leaves the bank. |
First House Built | Several trainers may train the same person. |
First New Restaurant | A free eternal mailbox in reach of the new restaurant. |
First Waitress Used | Salaries cost $3 each instead of $5. |
The new airplane campaigns are added to the supply.
Ketchup

Add the Someone Sells Your Demand milestone. You claim it at the end of a Dinnertime in which another player sold to a house carrying demand your marketeer created. From the next Dinnertime, customers count your distance as 1 less (price + distance − 1). It works with any milestone set and stacks with First Marketeer Used.
Fry Chefs

Use the expansion’s Burger and Pizza Cooks and Kitchen Trainees, and add the Fry Chefs. Any cook can be trained into a Fry Chef. Each Fry Chef played earns +$10 per sale (per house served, however many items). It doesn’t change your price for competition.
Night Shift Managers
Add the Night Shift Managers (1x). They go only in a CEO slot. Every employee you played that has no salary works twice this round, as if you had two copies. Marketing Trainees may launch two billboards; Waitresses earn double and count twice for ties. A Management Trainee and the CEO gain nothing.
Mass Marketeers

Add the Mass Marketeers and the expansion Marketing Trainees. For each Mass Marketeer played, by anyone, there is one extra Marketing phase. All campaigns run once, then all again; duration counters come off only after the last phase.
Rural Marketeers

Add the Rural Marketeers, the expansion Marketing Trainees, the Rural Area, its 4 campaigns, 3 freeways and the First Rural Marketeer Used milestone.
- The Rural Area is one huge house off the map, with no demand limit. It eats last.
- A Rural Marketeer places a rural campaign beside the Rural Area, always eternal, with one item. Each Marketing phase it adds 2 demand there. The marketeer stays busy for good.
- First Rural Marketeer Used: you may place a freeway along the map edge next to a road. Distance to the Rural Area is counted from a freeway.
Gourmet Food Critics

Add the Gourmet Food Critics, the expansion Marketing Trainees and the 4 gourmet campaigns. A critic places a gourmet campaign beside the map (1–3 counters of one item). When it markets, every house with a garden gets 1 demand. Houses without gardens, apartments and the Rural Area get none.
Movie Stars

Use the expansion Waitresses, which can be trained into Movie Stars. Add a B-Movie Star (2–3 players), plus a C (4 players), plus a D (5–6 players). You may own only one Movie Star.
- With a Movie Star played you choose your turn order position before everyone else: B, then C, then D.
- Ties decided by Waitresses go to the Movie Star: B beats C, C beats D, D beats everyone else.
Reserve Prices

Each player gets the 3 new reserve cards instead of the base ones. When the bank first breaks, add $200 per player and CEO slots don’t change. The base price shown most often becomes the new base price from then on. Ties: $20 beats $10, and $5 beats $10.
Hard Choices
Use with the base milestones. Mark First Burger, Pizza and Drink Marketed and First to Train an Employee “remove after turn 2”, and First to Hire 3 “remove after turn 3”. If still unclaimed then, they are crossed out for everyone.
Six Players
Add the sixth chain (Siap Faji). Use a 4 × 6 map, which needs the New Districts module, and 3 copies of each 1x employee, as with 5 players. No other changes.
