Tips & Strategy
How to teach Florenza: X Anniversary Edition, first-game advice, strategy for Workshops, Artworks, offices and Kinsmen, player counts and the solitaire Ghosts — advice, not rules.
Advice only: where anything here differs from the rules pages, the rulebook wins.
How to teach
- Follow the round: income, the two offices, then Phase 4 placements, then what each placement does in Phases 5 and 6. The Dice Tower’s pocket playthrough (Stella and Tarrant) and La maschera riposta’s example game both go phase by phase after the starting Workshop draft.
- Teach the starting Workshop draft with the game set up: players pick in reverse order, and only Workshops 1–6 and the Cambiavalute are affordable (setup).
- Show early that every Artwork is paid twice — the box and the Artist.
- Keep Teach the Game open; its two tables cover scoring and resources.
First game
- Complete at least one Artwork in your Palazzo and one in your Chiesa. An empty one costs 8 at the end (the rulebook’s own first hint).
- Only plan what you can pay. A failed Artwork costs up to 4 Prestige; another player taking the Artwork you wanted costs nothing. BoardGameGeek Express’s preview with the publisher stresses the failure penalties.
- Build some money Workshops. Base income feels enough at first and runs short later.
- Mind the space order. A Workshop that needs Marble should sit after the one that makes it — or plan to cover it at the Market, which works at any time in Phase 5.
- Allow three hours for a first game with four.
Workshops and Artworks
- District Artworks are cheap and safe from rivals (only the Artist can be taken); the Civic Buildings sit in the middle; the Cathedral costs most and pays most, with two prestige rolls (BoardGameGeek Express).
- The Dice Tower playthrough recommends the main-board Artworks once your engine runs, and points out that a completed Palazzo pays 4 Prestige every round after — finishing it early pays off.
- Build Workshops others will want: each visit pays you 1 Prestige.
- Choose Workshops that feed the Artworks you are aiming at (rulebook hint).
- Watch the Life in Florenza row: an Artist under card I leaves this round.
Offices, Kinsmen and Captains of Fortune
- Kinsmen matter most mid-game. Before paying a Preacher, make sure you can use the extra Kinsmen.
- A single Prestige Point — what you pay to use a rival’s Workshop — can decide who becomes Captain, and final scores are often close (rulebook hint).
- Captain is about timing: once you bank your Prestige you drop to 0 and the role passes on. The Captain’s choice of the common Resource and the detained Artist are worth planning round.
- Captains of Fortune turn spare Fiorini into Prestige or Church Influence late in Phase 5.
Player counts
- 2 players: open; Workshops and Artists are rarely contested, and the Cardinal bonus is only 2.
- 4–5 players: tight competition for Artworks, Artists and Workshop spaces, and turn order matters more. At 5 the first player picks starting Workshops last (setup).
- Expect long turns: every placement asks for planning two phases ahead.
Solo
- The Ghosts never pay, so they score steadily; Medium and Masterpiece Ghosts score Artists as a 6. No Fluff Solo Gaming with John LaRuffa singles the Ghost mode out as the edition’s headline.
- Several Ghosts make each one fail more often, so a harder level may be fair (Solitaire).
- A Ghost can still take your Workshop space for the round and the Artist you wanted.
Videos vs the rulebook
- Videos of the first and second editions (Rahdo Runs Through, Gaming Rules!) show the older rules: 4 Kinsmen of income instead of 3, limited Resources, the Bishop converting a Kinsman of one opponent, no Captains of Fortune. Use the X Anniversary rules here.
- A play-through summary may suggest Workshop output on a later space cannot help an earlier space at all; in this edition the Market, Family Business and Captains of Fortune work at any time in Phase 5, so you can fill the gap there (BGG ruling).
