Phase 4: Kinsmen
The seven places a Kinsman can go in Florenza — operate or build a Workshop, hire an Artist, give to Charity, the Market, the Family Business and the Captains of Fortune.
Placing Kinsmen
This is the phase that decides the game. Starting with the Captain of the People (if any), players
follow the Turn Order Track and place one
Kinsman at a time from their income
area, round and round, until everyone has placed all of theirs. A player who runs out simply drops
out of the rotation. In round 1 everyone has 3 Kinsmen.
Except for Charity, nothing happens yet: Workshops and the Market act in Phase 5, Artworks are paid in Phase 6. You do not need the Resources or Fiorini when you place — but you will need them then.
| Placement | Where | Resolved | |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Operate a Workshop | a built Workshop in any District | Phase 5, in order |
| B | Build a Workshop | the next free space of your District | Phase 5, in order |
| C | Hire an Artist | an empty Artwork box, yours or on the main board | Phase 6 |
| D | Give to Charity | your Chiesa’s Predicatore space or the Cathedral’s | at once |
| E | Trade at the Market | the Market (one Kinsman per player) | Phase 5, any time |
| F | Run the Family Business | the Family Business space (no limit) | Phase 5, any time |
| G | Hire a Captain of Fortune | a free Captain of Fortune card | Phase 5, any time |
Operate a Workshop
Put a Kinsman on any built Workshop that has no Kinsman on it — each Workshop works once per round. You get its benefit in Phase 5.
- Your own Workshops are free.
- A rival’s Workshop costs 1 Prestige Point, paid to its owner as you place: your Captain marker goes back 1, theirs forward 1. At −3 on the Prestige Track you cannot do this.
- The purple Workshops (n. 22–30) cannot take Kinsmen: they pay their owner automatically in Phase 1.
Build a Workshop
Take a Workshop tile from the supply, put it Under Construction side up on the lowest-numbered free space of your District (no gaps between Workshops) and put the Kinsman on it. It is built — and paid for — in Phase 5. Your District has 8 spaces, and the Building/Artwork table lists every Workshop’s cost and effect.

The picture shows a Workshop tile: the cost to build it, the benefit for a Kinsman placed there, the immediate reward when it is built and its identification number.
Hire an Artist
Put a Kinsman on an Artwork box that has no Family Crest and no Kinsman — in your own District (Palazzo or Chiesa) or on the main board (the Cathedral and the five Civic Buildings). At the same moment choose the Artist: take his tile from his card (the card stays in the Life in Florenza row) and put it under your Kinsman.
- Any Artist whose tile is on his card may be hired, under whichever Life in Florenza card.
- Artists have one or more skills —
architecture,
sculpting,
painting. One of his skills must match one shown on the Artwork. - Each skill has its own cost, printed at the top of his card. You pay it, plus the Artwork’s own Resources and Fiorini, in Phase 6.
Unnamed Artists
The Life in Florenza cards III, IV and V show an unnamed Artist for each skill. There are always as many as you want, and they are free: you pay only the Artwork’s costs. Place your Kinsman on the Artwork with no tile. Their prestige table is poor — a bad roll can even lose a point.
Give to Charity
Charity brings distant cousins to help this round. Put a Kinsman on an empty Predicatore (Preacher) space — the one in your District’s Chiesa or the one in the Cathedral — and take the tile of a Preacher who has not had Charity this round (his tile still on his card). Then at once:
- pay the cost at the top of his card;
- move the
Kinsmen shown at the bottom of his card from your pool to your income area; - apply his
immediate effect.
The Cathedral space works for the first player to use it each round only: it costs 100 Fiorini more and gives 1 Kinsman more.
Placing the Preacher was your turn: the new Kinsmen are used on later turns this round — except with Antonio da Padova.
The Preachers
| Preacher | Immediate effect |
|---|---|
Antonio da Padova | Place all the Kinsmen he brings straight away, without waiting for your turns |
Bernardo di Chiaravalle | You may swap 1 of your Resources for 1 of another type from the supply |
Giordano Bruno | Lose 1 |
Girolamo Savonarola | Lose 1 |
| Francesco d’Assisi | No effect, but 1 Kinsman more than the other Preachers |
| Tommaso d’Aquino | Gain 1 |
Antonio da Padova and Bernardo di Chiaravalle cost 150 Fiorini and bring 2 Kinsmen (read from their cards); see the Cards page for the others.
Unnamed Preacher
Life in Florenza card II shows an unnamed Preacher, always available: pay 100 Fiorini and put your Kinsman on a Predicatore space with no tile. He brings the Kinsmen shown on that card.
Trade at the Market
Each player may send one Kinsman a round to the Market. Unlike a Workshop, every player can be there. It lets you sell, buy and trade Resources in Phase 5.
Run the Family Business
Put a Kinsman on the Family Business space: in Phase 5 it brings 50 Fiorini. There is no limit — place as many as you like, one per turn as usual.

Hire a Captain of Fortune
Put a Kinsman on a Captain of Fortune card with no Kinsman on it. In Phase 5 you choose how many Fiorini to pay and take the matching row of rewards. Captains of Fortune stay all game.
[Solo] Ghosts place Kinsmen on their own Action Table instead — see Solitaire.
