Tips & Strategy
How to teach Unconscious Mind, first-game advice, player counts, when to add modules and expansions, and where videos differ from the rulebook.
Advice only — the rules pages and the rulebook decide.
How to teach it
- Start with the theme and the goal: treat Clients by working through their Dreams with Insights; Catharsis switches on a Client’s power, the Cure scores it.
- Then the turn: State Ideas first (place, act, move the Inkpot, fire the notebook), then Recall and Treat Clients.
- Teach the Insight dial with pieces in hand: Generate, Elevate, Suppress, Transfer.
- Finish with Research, Treatises and the Reputation track, and the difference between gaining and triggering Reputation.
- Mistakes teachers see most: Elevating straight out of the reserve, mixing up Catharsis and Cure, forgetting to open the Secondary Office Room at the first Catharsis, pointing twice at an action your Ideas already point at.
Your first game
- Build the notebook early. Notebook tiles are the engine: every Inkpot stop fires a row or column, and completed lines free your player-color Insights.
- Unlock your Ideas. Aim your Inkpot moves past the unlock icon: more workers, and unlocked columns for the top space.
- Place two Ideas when you can. The designer’s own tip on BGG: one-Idea turns cost you tempo and clog the table (thread).
- Get your starting Client to Catharsis fast — it opens your second Office Room. Routine Clients give powers for the whole game; Case-Study Clients pay at the end, so they suit later turns.
- Grab easy Location Goals for Reputation and tags; staying ahead on the Reputation track pays 2 VP per Treatise and Cured Client at the end.
- The City Map grows with your tags. Early on a visit triggers little; later one move can fire five effects. Plan District bonuses in different Districts for the 4 / 10 / 18 score.
- Treatises later. You need in-play cards and a free player-color Insight; when others publish, cite them to close the gap (it pays them too).
- Keep spare Coffee and Heart-Shaped Boxes for the last turn: a Minor + Median + Major set can still become a box worth 2 VP or a final Therapy point.
Player counts
- 2 players: quick turns, but fewer figures move around Vienna, so Locations trigger less. Many players add the Journalist from the start at this count.
- 3 players is often called the best balance; at 4, long chained turns add downtime.
Modules and expansions
- Journalist — from the first or second game, especially at 2.
- Fireworks — a gentle help with District bonuses for newer players.
- Location Overlays — after a few games, for variety on the map.
- [Nightmares] — only once the base game is familiar. Pets make Inkpot timing easier; the Gramophone raises every limit and lengthens turns, so it fits lower player counts better. (Nightmares)
- [FreeAssoc] — Mirror Clients and Rendezvous Objectives add little rules weight; Illusion Dreams are strong (an outright Cure plus a Reputation trigger). (Free Association)
Host game
Before play, demonstrate catharsis with a Client, a Grief Layer and the Therapy marker. Lift the layer only when the marker crosses its icon, and distinguish that reward from curing. On the first three turns, check that new Ideas do not point at an action already targeted by that player’s Ideas; another player’s Ideas do not block it. Finish with the end-of-turn check for Heart-Shaped Boxes and vacant Office Rooms.
Videos versus the rulebook
- In Unconscious Mind - Tutorial & Playthrough (Gaming Rules!) the host corrects on screen three slips: pointing a second Idea at an action space he already pointed at, forgetting to open the Secondary Office Room at the first Catharsis, and a Client power that only Transfers Minor Insights freely. The rulebook and these pages follow the corrected rules.
- Older videos made before the Kickstarter release show treatment as part of a State Ideas turn; in the published game, treating Clients is its own turn (the designer confirmed the change: thread).
