Tips & Strategy
Practical decisions for bag-building, risk and round timing.
How to teach it
Demonstrate one complete brew with the starting bag: show the gap made by a value-2 chip, then stop before the white total passes 7. Explain the chosen ingredient set before the first draw; chip powers depend on recipe side. Finish by walking through scoring A–F so players see how stopping position pays points and shopping value.
First game
- Use Set 1, which the publisher recommends for new players. Add only the books as the turn marker reveals them.
- Choose a stopping point after every chip; a growing pot does not make another draw automatically safe.
- Treat the white total as a separate counter. Colored values move the potion but do not make it explode.
- Save the flask for a white chip that is safe to return. It cannot undo the chip that caused an explosion.
- Buy chips that fit the selected books. Their prices and abilities differ by set; use the table itself rather than memorizing another set’s recipe.
Strategy from the rules and video demonstrations
- Track what remains in your bag after each brew. Buying changes the odds only gradually; early white chips remain a large share of the bag until you add more ingredients. The Watch It Played teach and Board Game Tutorials teach both demonstrate the draw, stop and evaluation loop before players choose how much risk to take.
- A low-scoring round may give you rat tails next round. Consider whether the extra start position is worth taking a smaller immediate reward. 3 Minute Board Games’ overview is a concise reminder of that round structure; Brettspiel-Zimmer’s German teach and Spielefürst’s setup summary reinforce the setup and round order.
- Stop when your likely gain from shopping and points is outweighed by the chance of losing one of those choices to an explosion. The Watch It Played rules teach models the full push-your-luck loop; Board Game Tutorials’ rules video is a second explanation.
- Colored effects are not interchangeable. The same color behaves differently across the four recipes; read the selected book before drawing and preserve the timing distinction between “drawn” and “placed.”
- Use rubies for droplet movement or a flask refill when another round remains. In the last round, compare each pair’s point conversion with the likely benefit of an earlier investment.
- With The Alchemists, watch the three inputs to essence progress—distinct colors, exactly seven white value, and exploded neighbors—and choose a patient action that fits the bag you actually built.
The German teach by Brettspiel-Zimmer - Guru erklärt, Quacksalber von Quedlinburg Regeln Anleitung Kennerspiel des Jahres 2018, demonstrates the original game. Spielefürst’s short Die Quacksalber von Quedlinburg in 58 Sekunden | Spielaufbau, Spielablauf und Spielziel kurz erklärt is a setup refresher. The Spanish rules explanations from Juegos de mesa 221B and oréiket present the same basic loop in Spanish; Juegos y más offers another short rules refresher. These explain the same base-game decisions; the Schmidt rules control details for this edition.
Player counts
The official base game supports 2–4 players. The Herb Witches adds the fifth player. In the two-player game, use the dedicated black-book page; it compares the black ingredient against one opponent rather than two neighbors. Do not treat the fan-made Rival Quack as an official solo mode.
Solo
There is no official solo ruleset in the publisher’s books. The fan Rival Quack module is described in Variants and Solo, but it is not a publisher-authored opponent and is not a substitute for multiplayer strategy.
Videos vs. the rulebook
These videos help demonstrate the flow; the selected Schmidt rulebooks control the exact recipe, component, and expansion rules. Some recent videos cover CMYK’s 2025 edition, whose wording and artwork differ. Check rules against the Schmidt 2024 English base book and the linked official expansion books.
