The Eight Characters

Each movement and power, its timing, restrictions and the Manhattan changes it makes.

All characters have Move one to three spaces 1–3 movement points. A Power before or after movement frame puts the power wholly before or wholly after movement; do not interrupt movement to use it. A Power instead of movement frame means a power replaces the normal move.

Alfred Ely Beach

Before or after moving, place one Metro entrance on an empty street space anywhere on the board. It must not be adjacent to another entrance, including an entrance under an Investigation tile. This power is mandatory. The new entrance immediately joins the Metro network.

Cloud Rider

Before or after moving, place one Building site on an empty street space anywhere on the board. This is mandatory. The site becomes an obstacle.

During her own movement, she may cross printed Buildings and Building sites without spending movement points, but must finish on a street space, Metro entrance, Park or quayside. Gaslamps and Investigation areas still block her. Parks are not free building crossings; the designer corrected an illustration in a later printing. FAQ

Lewis Howard Latimer

Before or after moving, place one Gaslamp on an empty street space anywhere on the board, not adjacent to another Gaslamp. Mandatory. Its adjacent street spaces and Metro entrances are immediately lit. The Gaslamp itself blocks movement.

Mrs Emma Grant

Before or after moving, turn one placed Gaslamp, Building site or Metro entrance tile into a Park. Mandatory. She transforms a tile rather than adding a new Park to an empty space.

An occupied Metro entrance may become a Park, including one occupied by the Informant. An entrance under an Investigation tile cannot. Printed Buildings and the printed central station are not loose tiles to flip. Adjacent Parks are allowed. The Park now conceals its occupant and prevents that occupant from revealing neighbours.

James H. Callahan

Before or after moving, relocate one Investigation tile. Mandatory. It must cover two street spaces, Parks or Metro entrances, with no character or Informant underneath. It cannot cover Gaslamps, Buildings, Building sites, quaysides or Liberty Island.

At least one covered space must be new; it may overlap one of its former spaces. Uncovered terrain immediately works again. FAQ

Monk Eastman

Either move Eastman normally or move one other character 1–3 spaces whose current visible/invisible status matches Eastman’s at the start of this activation. The Witness card is irrelevant to this comparison.

The moved character does not use its own power, cannot use the Metro, and cannot accuse. Cloud Rider also loses her special free Building crossings during this move. Normal street, Park and ferry movement is allowed; the moved character may consult the Informant. If it is Jack, Jack’s player can use this move to escape when the Witness card permits it. FAQ

Francis J. Tumblety

Before or after moving, he may swap one adjacent character with another character elsewhere on the board. Optional; use it at most once in this activation.

Tumblety himself cannot be one of the swapped characters. A character in an adjacent Park can be chosen, and the distant character may be on Liberty Island. The Informant is never a swap target. FAQ

Edward Smith

Before or after moving, move one Steamer to another empty port. Mandatory. This relocates an escape opportunity without changing anybody’s visibility.
