Tips & Strategy

Teaching order and practical race planning.

How to teach it

Explain the finish first, then each rider’s distinct deck. Walk through one Energy phase with a single rider and keep selected, recycled and permanently played cards in separate piles. After that, show movement from front to back. Demonstrate one blocked move, one slipstream, and one Exhaustion check. Teach the terrain after players understand the flat-road loop; start with the introductory stage.

The strongest short teaching sequence is visible in How to Play Flamme Rouge by Geek & Sundry. The tutorial demonstrates the race as a sequence of card choices and movement; return to the rulebook for the exact finish and terrain wording.

Your first game

Use Avenue Corso Paseo and leave Peloton, Meteo, Grand Tour modules, specialist cards and fan variants out. New players can focus on deciding which rider gets the best card and when to let the pack carry them. Remind them that selected cards are hidden until the movement phase, but the three recycled cards are face up.

Card economy

Rouleur and Sprinteur decks have different value distributions. The base component list shows 120 Energy cards across four player colors, so each rider has 15 cards. The Sprinteur’s top value is powerful but scarce; do not treat it as automatic movement on mountain sections, where the terrain cap can waste the excess. The Rouleur offers steadier choices and can help position a teammate without forcing the Sprinteur to lead.

Two playthroughs highlight practical patterns from Flamme Rouge Full Playthrough - JonGetsGames by Getting Games and Flamme Rouge Gameplay Runthrough by Rahdo Runs Through: watch how a rider’s position changes the value of its next card, and avoid spending the strongest card merely to move into a pack that will draft forward anyway. Those are planning heuristics; apply the printed movement rules to the actual terrain and gaps.

Position and drafting

5 Quick Strategy Tips for Flamme Rouge- TCbH’s Cardboard Academy by The Cardboard Herald advises players to use the middle of a group, coordinate the two riders’ movement, plan around climbs, and save a late attack for the back third of the course. These are strategic suggestions, not rules. Leading may create a gap and exhaustion; falling too far behind can miss a draft. Look at the whole pack before choosing.

Terrain planning

On an ascent, a card above the movement cap loses its excess. Keep moderate cards available for climbs when possible. On descents, a low card can still produce the terrain minimum. A valuable high card may be better saved for a flat sprint or a road section where it can do its full work.

The Italian tutorial Come giocare a Flamme Rouge guida tutorial gioco dell anno 2018 sfida tra biciclette ita by Dr. Cthulhu and the German rules teach Flamme Rouge - Komponenten & Regeln - Cyrils Brettspiele(S165E01) by Nils “Cyril`s Brettspiele” Herzmann provide additional table demonstrations. For a Spanish setup/rules walkthrough, see Cómo jugar a Flamme Rouge by Devir TV. A tutorial’s quick explanation does not replace the rulebook for a disputed movement case.

Player counts

With more teams, occupied spaces and draft chains change quickly. Plan for lane capacity and terrain bottlenecks. Peloton’s 5–6 player rules add supply zones and a breakaway setup; do not copy the 2–4 player setup unchanged.

Solo

The base designer solo mode and Peloton’s official solo mode use different automated teams. Start with the published rules’ handicap. Make one adjustment at a time after a first race so the result is interpretable. The fan-made Legendary Riders campaign adds talents and dice-run rivals, so use its own solo setup.

Videos versus the rulebook

Use videos to see the rhythm of a race and to compare possible card choices. The rulebook controls exact card handling, terrain limits, slipstream order, exhaustion and finish resolution. One common video shorthand can sound as if both riders’ hands are drawn together; the base rulebook requires choosing the first rider’s card before drawing for the second.
