Tips & Strategy
How to teach Beer Pioneers, advice for a first game, building the brewery engine, orders, turn order and objectives, the Beer Boom modules and solo, and where videos differ from the rulebook.
Advice, not rules — the rulebook pages always win.
How to teach it
- Teach the Game is the script. Tour the brewery board before the main board: coops, depot, cellar, progress and administrative area, then the worker actions (BIER PIONIERE - Come si gioca + il Mio Parere, Il Meeple Con La Camicia).
- Explain the three card colours and the sum-of-6 bonus rule early; they come up every turn (Bier Pioniere - Tutorial - KludiK, KludiK).
- Walk one beer from dial to delivery; the numbers (coop + progress) click once seen.
Host game
Before an early worker placement, ask the player to name the main action, any bonus and the resources each needs. When a plan involves an order, point to the required beer and barrels in the cellar rather than counting everything on the brewery board.
Rehearse main action then bonus
Use the rulebook’s simple threshold example: a level-2 worker on an available value-4 space makes 6. Complete the worker action before placing an available small bonus worker on the bonus board. A bonus cannot supply something needed to make the preceding main action legal. Reaching 6 gives the opportunity for a bonus; you still need an available small bonus worker.
Then demonstrate barrel preparation: taking new barrels puts them in your depot; moving barrels sends them down to empty cellar spaces. Barrels in the cellar can fulfil orders; barrels in the depot cannot fulfil an order. Before starting a delivery plan, count the beer and prepared barrels together.
Your first game
- Most points come from orders: plan two or three good deliveries and build towards their beers.
- Barrels need two steps — take them, then move them to the cellar. Players forget the second step.
- Brewing level, unlocked coops and progress go together: a higher level is wasted without open coops, and many open coops brew slowly without progress.
- Watch your small bonus workers: sacrificing one to an objective scores now but costs bonus actions later.
Building the engine
- Develop the brewery early — extensions, blocking tokens, progress — rather than brewing only Alt (Bier Pioniere – Brettspiel – Review und Regelerklärung, Hunter & Friends - Brettspiele).
- Upgrade workers early: a 3 or 4 reaches the sum of 6 on more spaces, so more bonus actions.
- The first builder of each extension gains a point; the 2nd–4th extension add free bonuses.
- Two lightbulbs open the improved bonus area (order, extension, 3 cards, 1 VP) and score at the end.
Turn order and money
- Late turn order spaces pay more (3 cards, the neutral truck or worker, a VP); early ones buy you first pick next round. Coins are tight all game: extensions cost 3, doubling an action 1.
Videos vs the rulebook
- In Booghy plays… Bier Pionere(2p, Rules, Playthrough, Review) both players score the same objective; with 2 players each objective scores only once.
- Some teaches describe final scoring part 2 as pairing lightbulbs with coins; the rulebook says pay 1 coin per lightbulb in your display for 1 point each, and only at the top of the brewing level track.
Beer Boom and solo
- The designer recommends at most two modules at a time; Export and House brand change the most.
- Solo, keep a blocking token in reserve every round: without one for the turn order action you lose at once.
