Nomad Attacks
Resolve the Xiongnu advance, defense ranking, raids and retreat.
Advance and strengthen
In each round, reveal its attack card. Move each of the four chieftains by the top-row value on that card, stopping at the
battle space if it would move farther. Increase each section’s Nomad Strength by its bottom-row value. In round four, chieftains move two extra steps.
Resolve a battle
At the end of the Action phase, resolve every section whose chieftain reached its
battle space.
- Total each player’s contribution: a
tower is two strength, a
wall and each soldier are one. - Award 7/4/2
Prestige to the first/second/third highest contributors. Break ties by leftmost soldier, then leftmost
wall, then having the
tower. - Reduce Nomad Strength by two per
tower and one per
wall. If it reaches zero, the defense holds. Otherwise, remove soldiers from left to right, one at a time, reducing strength by one each. Each returned soldier earns its owner one
Prestige. Stop once strength reaches zero. - If strength remains, raid along the path. At each building, remove all governors, add an additional-cost token, replenish its bonus tile if empty, then reduce strength by the number printed beneath it. Continue to the next building while strength remains. If all buildings are raided, each player loses one
coin or three
Prestige for every remaining strength. - The player who earned the most
Prestige in the contribution ranking gains one
Prestige for every governor remaining on the attacked path, regardless of owner. - Return the chieftain to its start and reset strength to the printed value for the next round. Recalculate defense markers from the pieces still present.
The defense marker
It is a reminder of total defense in that section; actual
battle scoring counts each player’s pieces separately. Building in a section both raises its protection and can improve your contribution rank, but soldiers may be removed in the
battle even when the
wall holds.
