Main Actions
Maestro's four Main Actions — Move, Create, Influence and Study — with the Effort to Action Points tables, Centerpieces and upgrading cards and Workshops.
Effort and Action Points
Play a card to an Action space; its
Effort gives the Action Points printed on that
Action’s overlay. Effort between two columns counts as the lower one.
| Action | Effort | Action Points |
|---|---|---|
| Move | 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 | 2 / 4 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 |
| Create — Florence | 1 / 2 / 4 / 6 | 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 Artworks |
| Create — Centerpiece regions | 3 or more | 1 Artwork in each |
| Influence | 1 / 2 / 4 | 1 / 2 / 3 |
| Study | 1 / 2 / 4 / 6 | 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 |
Michelangelo’s bonus: after playing the card, Michelangelo may spend any of his available Resources that match the Action space’s colour: +1 Effort for each.
Move
For each Action Point, move one of your Artworks to an adjacent region — one that shares a border or is joined by a sea route. You may pass through gray regions (war, revolt, plague) but never end a move there.
Centerpieces
When you finish the action, check every region with a Gallery: if you have more Artworks there than the rival Workshop, put one of yours on top of the Gallery — it is the Centerpiece. A Centerpiece already there goes back down to the region.
- A tie changes nothing: the Workshop that got there first keeps the Centerpiece.
- Movement from other sources (a Benefactor card, say) is a separate move: check Centerpieces after each one.
- Michelangelo’s Busts and Statues all count toward his majority.
Create
First, always gain 1 Artwork into your supply. Then choose one:
- Florence: place Artworks from your supply in
Florence — 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 for
1 / 2 / 4 / 6 Effort; or - Centerpiece regions (3+ Effort): place 1 Artwork from your supply in each region where you hold a Centerpiece. Effort beyond 3 is lost.
Influence
For each Action Point, take one standing Collector from an area of the Collector Lodge, move it to any other area and lay it down. Gain 1 Resource of the colour of the area it left. A Collector lying down can’t move again this round.
The number of Collectors in each area — standing or lying — sets which colours score most in the Exhibition.
Study
For each Action Point, advance your
Study marker one space and take its reward:
- a Resource of the colour shown (it goes to your other Character’s section);
- upgrade a card;
- upgrade your Workshop;
- upgrade a card or your Workshop.
The track is split into 6 tiers; some cards and Patroness cards count the tiers you reached. The Study Bonus tiles laid out at setup add rewards to some spaces. Being farther on the track also breaks Publicity ties.
Upgrading a card
Choose a card in your hand, or one of your cards on the main board (even the one you just played), and replace it with a card from your Upgrade display. The old card goes back to the box; the Upgraded card joins your deck for the rest of the game. Then refill the display.
- Replacing a card on the board changes only this round’s Publicity. Upgrading the card you just played changes neither its Publicity nor your Action Points this turn.
- You may upgrade a face-down Gossip card: show the old card’s Publicity for scoring, then put the new one face down.
- Alone, you can’t upgrade your 3 set-aside cards while you still have cards in hand.
Scoring an upgrade
- From your hand: score the old card’s
Effort in VP. - From the board: score the old card’s
Publicity in VP. - Multiply by 1 / 1 / 2 / 2 in rounds 1 / 2 / 3 / 4.
Upgrading da Vinci’s Workshop
Place 2 Upgrade markers on any 2 Resources shown on the Blueprint tiles. A covered Resource is no longer needed for that Blueprint. Every Blueprint tile must keep at least one Resource uncovered.
Upgrading Michelangelo’s Workshop
Place a Workshop Upgrade tile on any cost space at the edge of the Workshop board. That row or column no longer costs that Resource: its Sistine Chapel tiles get cheaper.
