Tips & Strategy
How to teach Container, a plan for the first game, what changes at three and five players, and three teaching videos — advice, not rules.
Advice from experienced players and teachers. None of it is a rule; the rulebook and Allplay’s official clarifications always win.
How to teach it
- The goal first. Most money wins: your
cash plus what your containers on Container Island are
worth on your secret card. Say it before anything else. - Follow one container. Factory → an opponent buys it into their harbor → a third player buys it onto their ship → Container Island, where everyone else bids for it. You never buy or ship your own goods, so every sale is to someone else.
- The turn. Interest, any won Bank auction, then two actions. Walk through
Build,
Produce, Factory
Purchase,
Harbor Purchase,
Sail and
Reprice in that order. - The delivery auction. Secret bids; accept the best and the supply matches it, or buy the cargo yourself by paying the Bank.
- Scoring last, with its twist. Your most common colour on the island is thrown away, and the two-value colour only pays $10 if you hold all five colours.
- The Off-Shore Bank and
loans go at the end of the teach, once the main loop is clear —
Container - How to play in 22 minutes! follows this
order.
Your first game
- Price low early. Everyone starts with $20. Factory goods at $1–$2 and harbor goods at $2–$3 sell; $4–$6 sits on your board and stops your production.
Build once, early. A second factory makes two containers for the same $1 wage; a warehouse lets
a buyer take more from your harbor in one action.- Ship small loads first. A full ship of five early on meets bidders who can’t afford it. Save big
cargoes for the middle and late game, when there is
cash on the table.
Sail to the island as your second action. Arriving starts the delivery auction and ends your turn.- Don’t buy your own cargo back unless the bids are insulting: the money leaves the players for the Bank and nobody gets the subsidy.
- Count before you borrow. A
loan is $10 now, $1 every turn, and $11 if it is still open at the end.
Missing interest lets the Bank seize containers — from the island first. - Watch your island mix. Piling up your $10 colour is a trap: the most common colour is discarded.
CONTAINER | Learn2Play(Through) shows these choices turn by turn in a full game.
Three or five players
- Three players is tight and tactical. Each player has to produce, buy and ship, so expect to build
more. Keep an eye on both opponents’
cash: if one is broke, a delivery has only one real bidder and
goes cheap. Only one Bank auction runs at a time. - Five players is wider and busier. With all five scoring cards dealt, each colour is likely someone’s top colour, a
cash-rich bidder is
usually around, and two Bank auctions can be open at once.
Videos versus the rulebook
- Older videos teach the 2007 or 2018 (10th Anniversary) editions. Their Investment Bank with three brokers is replaced in this edition by the Off-Shore Bank and its lots.
- Some groups play a variant where a $0 card voids a bid. In this edition the bluff cards only hide how many cards you bid.
- Player
loans with secret interest rates in older expansions are not this edition’s
Player Loans. - Container (2026 ed) - Teach & Playthrough by Before You
Play teaches the current edition, Bank and
loans included.
