Tips & Strategy
Choose a focused engine and time your lens multipliers, publishing and public objectives.
Teach and plan a first game
The Carl von Linne: Tutorial & Playthrough from Gaming Rules! shows the actions in context; the Carl von Linné - We Just Played It! discussion from Man vs Meeple is useful for seeing how the systems fit together. The rulebook remains authoritative for icon wording and final scoring.
Build a coherent engine
There are only fifteen instrument placements across five rounds. Choose a direction early and let public
achievements and the three university scoring tiles guide the plan.
Explore and research create the
knowledge and
sketches needed to publish; a completed
voyage paired with a
book can then pay income across the remaining rounds. The Gaming Rules! playthrough also emphasizes sequencing a small number of connected scoring systems rather than trying to maximize every board.
Place actions where they matter
Use the microscope’s triple action for an action whose repeated rewards are valuable, but weigh it against the next-round turn-order space you must claim. Glasses are a natural fit when three
taxonomy steps can earn an upgraded
lens. The magnifier gives useful
tools or
containers while doubling an action. Upgraded-
lens powers add their printed effect once, even when the basic action is repeated, so plan the strongest instrument around the action itself rather than multiplying the bonus.
Keep the publication loop moving
Gather enough
knowledge and
sketches before spending a turn on a
book. A matching
sketch triggers its effect; a mismatched
sketch still pays the
book requirement but is face-down. If the
book is paired to a completed
voyage, its recurring destination income can repay the setup cost. Pairing is optional, but permanent once made, so wait when another
voyage is likely to be more useful. This optional pairing ruling is also summarized in the BGG Rules thread.
Avoid easy-to-miss rules
- A second
Explore action may investigate the same location again without moving; the one-time reward is only for the first visit.
Research resolves the globe and every adjacent uncovered
sample corner, separately. A phylum cannot hold more than two

flower directly, but does not also grant the pond-tile or
sketch bonus, per the publisher’s clarification. - Sending a same-color
letter reactivates that column, up to three
letters; each
letter still counts at most once in end-game sets.
