Intrigue expansion

Optional political actions and family powers for Calimala.

Short tag: [Intrigue]

Calimala: Intrigue is an expansion included with the Deluxe Edition and sold separately by Alley Cat Games. It adds a faction track, four possible Intrigue actions, and asymmetric Family cards. The base rules remain in effect, with the changes below.

Setup changes

Place the Intrigue board beside the game board. Each player places both faction markers on the track’s central space. Shuffle the four Intrigue Action tiles and place one at random on each empty City Grid space. Put the church and Palazzo Vecchio overlays on matching areas; shuffle the six Banking tiles and put one beside each city. Reveal a Family-card display with one more card than the number of players. During starting Action-card selection, each player also chooses a Family card and follows its setup instructions.

A turn with Intrigue

After placing and activating workers and completing the base actions, the active player may take one Intrigue action shown beside their placed worker. If it is impossible, they may draw an Action card, in addition to any base-game draw, so a turn may produce at most two cards. After the Intrigue action, the player may discard cards to move faction markers: Banking or Emperor moves one marker left; Artwork or Cardinal moves one right. The markers may never be more than five spaces apart.

The four Intrigue actions

ActionEffect
CardinalMove one Cloth cube from a Workshop to the next empty space in the Cardinal area.
ArtworkMove one Cloth cube from a Workshop to an empty Artwork space at a church or Palazzo Vecchio.
EmperorMove one Brick, Wood or Marble cube from a matching warehouse to the next empty space of that resource in the Emperor area.
BankingMove one Brick, Wood or Marble cube from a matching warehouse to a matching Banking space in any city. No Ship or Trade House is needed.

Scoring

Artwork cubes count when their church or Palazzo Vecchio is scored. Banking cubes count when their city is scored, but not for Ship or Transport scoring. Faction markers can add points to eligible church, resource and city Scoring tiles; only your furthest marker on either side provides a bonus. At game end, the more-populated Cardinal or Emperor area scores 5/3/1 VP, and the other scores 3/2/1; if tied, each scores 3/2/1. These area majorities also use the base tie-breakers. Scoring cards can count Banking and Artwork cubes, but faction markers add no bonus to card scoring.

Family cards

Each card grants a different family power and some change setup. Read the chosen card’s full ability and apply it as written. The nine families are Cerchi, Bardi, Peruzzi, Pazzi, Mozzi, Medici, Spini, Pulci and Scali. A few cards refer directly to tracks or areas added by Intrigue; keep the complete module enabled when using those families.
