Tips & Strategy
Teaching and first-game advice grounded in the rulebook and practical video explanations.
How to teach it
- Begin with the two eras, the end-of-era VP scoring, and the goal of having the highest score after Rail scoring.
- Teach the action-card rule before action details. Build cares about the card; every action still spends one.
- Show the map’s network rule, then explain why coal, iron, and beer each have different access rules.
- Explain income separately from VPs: income changes when a tile flips, but VPs are counted at era end.
Your first game
- The official Introductory Game uses only Canal Era, with extra scoring for cash, income, and surviving level 2+ Industry tiles (variant).
- Use the Level 1 and other low-level Industry tiles early to discover costs and build placement; Build always takes the lowest remaining tile of that industry.
- Keep access to coal in mind before the Rail Era; every rail link needs coal and a two-link action also needs Brewery beer.
- Do not judge loans by the final income tie-break alone. A loan adds £30 now but lowers income by three levels.
Player counts
Two-player games remove the blue and teal Location cards and use 10 rounds per era. Three players remove teal Location cards and use 9 rounds. Four players use all Location cards and play 8 rounds per era. Merchant spaces are also filtered by their player-count marks (setup).
Videos versus the rulebook
Video explanations help make the turn sequence and resource flow visible. If a video differs from the current Roxley rulebook, follow the rulebook. The links below are all about the 2018 Brass: Birmingham rules; their examples or edition details may differ.
