Tips & Strategy
How to teach The White Castle, first-game advice, dice and Bridges, coins, Courtiers, Warriors and Gardeners, the Lantern engine and turn order — advice, not rules.
Advice only: where anything here differs from the rules pages, the rulebook wins.
How to teach
- Open with the number that shapes everything: nine turns in the whole game (three rounds of three) — Peaky Boardgamer says it first.
- Then setup in the order the rulebook gives it, dice placement and its coin maths, the three main actions, the round end and scoring. Ludex’s Teach the Game follows this order.
- Warn early that Gardeners do not act after round 3, and that Warriors need Courtiers inside the Castle.
First game
- Plan turns, not rounds. With nine turns, have a second option for every plan: someone will take the die you wanted (The Cardboard Herald).
- Efficiency in rounds 1–2, points in round 3 (The Cardboard Herald).
- Use Seals as emergency change: 2 for a Resource, 1 for a coin, any time (Daimyo Seals).
Dice and Bridges
- Don’t take the last die of a Bridge if your Gardeners there need it at the round end (End of the round) — The Cardboard Herald.
- As dice are taken, the middle dice slide to the ends: later players can find higher dice at the Lantern end.
- Avoid “lantern vision”: a 1 instead of a 6 is 5 coins apart — take the Lantern only when it is worth that (The Cardboard Herald).
Courtiers, Warriors, Gardeners
- Gardeners are your steady income: each pays again at the end of rounds 1 and 2.
- Courtiers climbing to the 1st and 2nd floors build your Lantern Area — the more you climb, the more a left-end die is worth.
- Warriors are cheap points only with Courtiers inside the Castle to multiply them.
Turn order
Going first is not always best: later players often get better Lantern dice (The Cardboard Herald). The Passage of Time pays well in round 3 and at the end.
Host game
Rehearse five over three for two coins, then one over five for a four-coin payment; use only empty spaces in a one- or two-player game. Keep a reminder beside the bridges: die, coin difference, left-end Lantern, actions. At the first round end, point to the three dice still on bridges and show which Gardens activate. At round 3, update turn order and go straight to scoring without another Garden activation.
Videos vs the rulebook
Both videos follow the rulebook; neither covers solo, Matcha or Bōeki — use the rules pages for those.
