Actions and Rounds
Market movement, action placement, card play and the workshop production sequence.
Round structure
Play three rounds. Each begins with a Market Update, continues through player turns and ends with End of Round steps.
Update the market
For the current round, return the three Market Markers to the player-count starting positions. Apply the three Demand Tile modifiers: demand 2 moves its marker up two spaces, demand 1 moves one, and demand 0 does not move. Then roll all three Market Dice. Assign the highest result to demand 2, the middle result to demand 1 and the lowest to demand 0; move each market marker up by that die’s value. In rounds two and three, the First Player may reroll all three dice once and must use the new result. The Competition never rerolls.
When you sell a piece, score the current price for that type and finish (painted or unpainted). Then move that type’s marker down by the current round’s Demand Tile value. Resolve each of up to two sales separately. Rulebook §7.1 and §7.2.3, pp. 7, 9. The reset is also discussed in the BGG market-update thread.
Player turns and closing
Start with the leftmost player on the Turn Order Track and continue clockwise. With an open Shop, choose exactly one option:
- Play Craftswomen: place workers on one action space and resolve one action from that row plus the matching column bonus per worker placed; or use one worker on the Special Action Space.
- Discard an Endgame Scoring Card: return one from your hand to the box to perform any Main Board action (the wild Indalo action).
- Sell: sell up to two pieces from your
Firing Kilns or Glaze Kilns. - Close the Shop: allowed only when you have no Craftswomen available. Flip the Shop Card and immediately take one Main Board or Special Action bonus; you may not take the Special Space’s
Collect Esparto bonus.
After your Shop is closed, each later turn gives one bonus of your choice from the Main Board or Special Action Space (again, not
Collect Esparto). If opponents bump your Craftswomen after your shop closes, put each returned worker on the Shop Card and choose a reward for each: 2 Clay, 3 Perra Gorda tokens or 3 Glazes.
An open-shop player may place one or more Craftswomen on a normal Action Space, exactly one more than are already there. Only one additional worker may be placed in that space; you cannot use a space already containing your color. Perform one of the three actions in that row, and gain the bonus beneath the chosen column once per worker placed. Choose the order of action and bonuses, but resolve bonuses before or after the action rather than during it. Return the other players’ workers from that space to their supplies; they can use those workers again this round. Blocked spaces are unavailable.
The Special Action Space takes one worker, does not bump anyone and keeps workers there until round end. It grants its three printed bonuses (
Collect Esparto, 1 Clay, acquire 1 card) in any order. Rulebook §7.2, pp. 8–10.
Acquire cards
Acquire up to two cards from the 3 × 5 Draft Area. The card beneath your Donkey costs nothing; each orthogonal space from it costs one Perra Gorda token. Cards beneath another player’s Donkey are unavailable. After choosing cards, move your Donkey to a different available card, then refill the empty spaces from their matching decks. If a row’s available cards are all one type, you may return that row, shuffle its deck and refill it once; this can be done before or after taking cards. If a deck runs short, refill left to right and leave the rest empty. Rulebook §8.1, p. 10.
Play cards
Cards have six workshop types and six matching spaces: Potter’s Wheel, Esparto, Cleanup,
Firing Kiln, Glazing Workshop and Glaze Kiln. Pay the cost in Perra Gorda tokens, Clay, Glazes or Cracks, then install the card in its matching space. The cost is at upper left and the type icon at lower right.
A new Potter’s Wheel or Esparto card immediately grants the action printed in its space. A Potter’s Wheel also adds a Wooden Vase to its first space and grants the shown VP. A new
Firing Kiln, Glaze Kiln or Glazing Workshop card gives its two side actions immediately. You may resolve actions partially or skip them if unable or unwilling. Rulebook §8.2, p. 11.
Main Board actions
Extract Clay
Take up to three Clay: one is free, two cost one Perra Gorda token, and three cost three tokens. Move your Clay marker; the track caps at seven, so excess Clay is lost.
Advance Technology
Advance your Technology marker one space. Reaching the last position grants 2 VP. Technology sets how many spaces your Wooden Vases can advance with one
Throw action: one, two or three.
Throw
Move one or more Wooden Vases a total number of spaces no greater than your Technology level. Divide movement among vases. Resolve each space’s benefit in movement order; you may skip a benefit. Reaching a wheel’s last space grants its reward and moves that vase to the lower completed space. A vase stays there to show that wheel is complete.
Shape spaces are reached by
Throw;
Shape is not a separate Main Board action.
Shape
Make one piece for 1 Clay, or two pieces for 2 Clay plus 2 Cracks. Take Plates, Jugs or Pots from the supply and place them unpainted in your Drying Area. The available type and supply are limited by components.
Fire
Move any number of pieces from Drying Areas to empty
Firing Kilns, and any number from Glazing Workshops to empty Glaze Kilns. Each kiln holds at most one piece.
Firing has no cost. A piece in either kiln is ready to sell.
Paint
Move one or more pieces from
Firing Kilns into empty Glazing Workshops and flip them to their painted sides. Pay each workshop’s paint cost using Glazes or Cracks as shown. Painted pieces must be fired again into Glaze Kilns before sale.
Clean
Move Cracks from your
Cleaning Area onto empty spaces on your Cleanup Cards.
Clean a number equal to the Cleanup Cards in your play area plus one. Return any Crack that has no available space to the general supply. Whenever a card fills, return its Cracks to the supply and gain its reward.
Collect Esparto
For each Esparto Card on your Workshop Board, including the printed starter card, choose one of that card’s two rewards. Resolve each card separately; you may choose the same or different reward types.
First Player action
Once per round, place one of your two Turn Order Markers on an empty space on the right-hand turn-order track. Gain or pay the Perra Gorda amount shown there, then perform any Main Board action. Its column bonus is also gained as usual. At End of Round, players on this track move to the left side in their order; the others shift right without changing their relative order. If nobody used this action, the order stays the same.
Bonuses
Bonuses are shown on yellow squares (blue for Esparto) and can be gained by placing workers, closing your shop or taking a bonus turn after closing. The seven bonus types are: take 1 Clay;
Fire 1 piece;
Paint 1 piece;
Throw 1 space;
Clean 1 Crack; acquire 1 card (3-player only); or take 2 Perra Gorda tokens / 2 Glazes (4-player only). The Special Action Space also offers
Collect Esparto. These are smaller versions of the corresponding actions: follow the same costs and restrictions, including card acquisition cost and per-card paint cost. Rulebook §9, pp. 14–15.
End of Round
- Return all of your Craftswomen and put one in the box. Flip your Shop Card open; players begin rounds 1, 2 and 3 with 7, 6 and 5 workers.
- Optionally play one Endgame Scoring Card from hand facedown beneath your Workshop Board. Discarding one during a turn for a wild action is a different use; only cards played here score.
- Flip the current round’s Demand Tiles facedown.
- Update the Turn Order Track from workers placed on its right side, pass the First Player Token to the leftmost player and stack each player’s two turn-order markers again.
