Events and Game End

Dominant Species: Marine events — Extinction, Survival and Reseed — then the Asteroid endgame and final scoring.

Events

Three events happen during play:

EventTriggered by
Extinction event (dead fish) ExtinctionA dead-fish icon on a newly dealt evolution card; once more just before final scoring
Survival event (live fish) SurvivalA live-fish icon on a newly dealt evolution card; once more just before final scoring
ReseedThe last food chain cube reaching the right column (not after the Asteroid round)

When several happen together, the order is Extinction → Survival → Reseed.

Extinction

Eliminate every endangered species on earth; they go to the box. The event goes on until no endangered species is left, even species that became endangered during the event (the Carnivore trait can cause this).

Survival

Make sure the animal with the most species on Vent tiles holds the Survival card; on a tie, nobody does. The holder scores bonus VPs for the number of Vent tiles with at least one of its species — how many species are on each does not matter (Bonus points table).

Reseed

The Retrieve row: a free action that moves your food chain cube

When all food chain cubes are in the right column, do these in order:

  1. Remove every element on earth whose corner is surrounded by exactly three Vent tiles.
  2. Resolve Regression, then return the Regression Box elements to the bag.
  3. Slide the Adaptation elements down into the Regression Box.
  4. Return the Depletion Box, Speciation and Wanderlust elements to the bag.
  5. Slide the Autotrophs Box elements into the Depletion Box, then the Abundance elements into the Autotrophs Box.
  6. Return the Competition and Evolution terrain markers to the red bag.
  7. Draw 4 new elements each for Abundance, Adaptation, Speciation and Wanderlust.
  8. Draw 3 terrain markers for Competition, and 5 for Evolution sorted in the printed terrain order.
  9. Move every food chain cube back to its left box.

Play goes on with the next animal in turn order. Pawns still on the display stay where they are.

Endgame

The Asteroid card is shuffled into the bottom 5 of the evolution deck. When a player takes it:

  1. Finish the round: play stops when the next Reseed would happen (skip that Reseed).
  2. Run a final Extinction event (dead fish) Extinction, then a final Survival event (live fish) Survival event.
  3. Score every tile of earth one last time (Final scoring).
  4. Each player scores the target-marker values of the special pawns they control.

Evolution cards still in the row cannot be used: there is no active player.

Final scoring

Score every tile exactly as an Evolution scoring, food chain ties included, then add your special pawns’ target values.

The highest total wins; a tie goes to the tied animal highest on the food chain. A score over 100 flips the VP marker to its +100 side.
