Passing and Scoring

Bone Wars passing and the end-of-round sequence, resetting the board, and the mid-game and final scorings.

Passing

Pass when you cannot or will not play another card. Do the end-of-round sequence at once, as the reminder on your player board shows:

  1. Choose a profession. Move your Profession marker profession marker to a free space in a different row and column of the profession track and take all its bonuses. In round 4 stop here.
  2. Return your team. Put your Team marker team marker on a free University university space. If that university belongs to the other patron, flip your patron tile.
  3. Claim a grant. Move your grant marker to the grant above that space.
  4. Loyalty bonus. Take the bonus printed above your loyalty marker on your current patron’s track (1 loyalty and/or $1). Bonuses you have climbed past are gone for good.

The profession track also sets the turn order of the next round, top to bottom.

Resetting the board

When everybody has passed, the round ends. After round 4 go straight to final scoring; otherwise:

  1. In each dig site, push the remaining bones up and fill the empty spots.
  2. Discard every species card on the dig sites and deal a new one to each.
  3. Take your played team cards back into your hand; discard played species and paleontologist cards (not the ones in your archive). Specialists go back beside your board.
  4. Move the round marker on. Entering round 3, do the mid-game scoring; entering round 4, put the endgame tile on the profession track.

The endgame tile

With the endgame tile, passing in round 4 gives loyalty instead of the usual profession bonuses. At 2 players skip the spaces marked for 3 and 4 players; at 3 players skip the ones marked for 4.

Mid-game and final scoring

Score before round 3 and again after round 4.

  1. Credibility of each patron: count the shelves on his half of the bookshelf with at least one paper. The small shelf under his portrait does not count, and neutral papers are ignored.
  2. Each player, each patron: your loyalty value (0–7, printed beside the track) × his credibility = Reputation points reputation points. Take them as reputation tokens.

Reputation tokens worth 1, 5 and 10

After the final scoring, add up your reputation tokens. Most wins; then most species cards in your archive; then the largest cranial circumference.
