The main board

Put the main board in the middle of the table. In your first games skip the next three steps: the standard Universities, Objectives and Breakthroughs are printed on the board.
Optional variety: sort the University tiles by colour (8 Southern, 7 Central), shuffle each type and lay one at random on every matching University space of the Travel map. The Scottish Universities stay as printed.
Optional variety: lay one random Objective tile of the matching colour on the Objective space of each action area. All four must show the same letter (A or B); redraw until they do.
Optional variety: shuffle the 9 Breakthrough tokens and put one at random on the Breakthrough space near the top of each Research track.
Sort the Assignment Scoring tokens into four colour stacks, the 1-point tokens underneath and the 2-point token on top, and put each stack on the space at the top of the Research track of that colour.
Shuffle the four 2-point Science Scoring tokens and put one at random above each Meeting room, then put the three 1-point tokens of the same Science underneath it.
Remove two dice of each colour and put the rest (40) in the bag. For each of the 6 Workshop spaces, draw 3 dice at random, roll them and put them in that space.
Shuffle the Program tiles into a face-down stack (or several smaller stacks) in Ada’s Study and deal 5 face up to the right of it.
Shuffle the Assignment cards into a face-down deck on its space in Ada’s Study and deal the top 4 face up to its right.
Set the four Starting Partner decks (S icon) aside. Shuffle the Tier 1 and the Tier 2 Partner cards separately and deal 1 Tier 1 card face down to each player (experienced players may draft them in reverse turn order instead).
Return Tier 1 cards to the box until exactly 6 remain. Put the Tier 2 cards beside the Meetings area (bottom left of the board), the 6 remaining Tier 1 cards on top of them as one face-down deck, and deal the top 4 face up below the Meeting rooms.
Sort the Gear tiles. Shuffle the Multiplier Gears into a face-down stack beside the board and deal 2 onto their space in the Meetings area (cost side up). Give each player 1 Addition Gear and 2 Subtraction Gears; put the remaining Addition Gears on their space in Ada’s Study.
Make a general supply of Coal, Brass and coins below the Institutions, and put the Books on their space in Ada’s Study. The supply is unlimited: use a substitute if anything runs out.

Solo: the Silver Lady

Set up a two-player game (two dice of each colour removed) with these changes. The Silver Lady is the first player; you take the second player’s extra £1.
Put the Silver Lady’s player board next to yours.
Choose a difficulty from 1 (easiest) to 4. Put that level’s Solo Reward tile to the left of her board and its Assignment tile on the space at the bottom of her board.
Take the matching side of the difficulty level card.
Give her the Innovation, Gear tiles (cost side up, where the card shows), Books and random Assignment cards shown on the difficulty card. Where an Assignment could go in more than one column, use the leftmost.
In an unused colour, move her Research tokens up the tracks that match her Assignment cards; she takes no rewards for this.
Put one of her discs on top of each of her Gear tiles.
She takes no other resources: she never gains or spends money, Coal or Brass, and uses Innovation differently.
Put her Steam marker on its starting space as normal.
From the unused dice, put 1 grey die above her board (the Workshop die) and 1 yellow, 1 purple, 1 green and 1 blue die in her bag.
Put another unused grey die, showing 1, on the highlighted start space of her reward track: this is the reward die.
Give her only the 4 Starting Partner cards that have a Science plus 1 random Tier 1 card (box her other 3 Starting cards) and lay them in face-up piles above her board, one per Science or Sponsor.
Put the turn-type aid card next to her board Workshop side up, and the two action aid cards nearby.

Each player

Choose a colour and take its Player board, 12 discs, 4 Research tokens, Travel token and 7 Starting Partner cards.
Put your Player board in front of you, leaving room on every side for cards above and Assignments below.
Put a Research token on the lowest space of each of the four Research tracks.
Put your Travel token on London (the START space) on the Travel map.
Put your 12 discs on the 12 Gear spaces of your Player board.
Put an Innovation token and a Steam token on the marked starting spaces of the Innovation and Steam tracks of your board.
Shuffle your dealt Tier 1 Partner card with your 7 Starting Partner cards and put them face down on the deck space above the right of your board. Draw 4 cards into your hand.
Take £4, 1 Coal, 1 Brass, 1 Book and the 2 Player Aid cards.

First player, then expansions and modules

Return every unused component to the box.
[Exhibition] Put the Great Exhibition board next to the main board.
[Exhibition] Shuffle the 12 Exhibitor cards, deal one into each of the 4 card spaces (Prince Albert, printed on the left, is always there) and put the rest face down beside the board.
[Exhibition] Put the 4 Visitor tokens at random on the Visitor spaces below the four card spaces; the fifth space (below Prince Albert) stays empty.
[Objectives] At the Objectives step you may replace any of the Objectives with Alternative Objective tiles; all four must still show the same letter.
[Bonus Tiles] Cover each of the 6 Workshop bonus spaces with a random Workshop Bonus tile, random side up.
[Essen] Instead of a random Tier 1 Partner card, deal each player one of the 4 asymmetrical Starting Partner cards to shuffle into their deck. Return the unused promo cards and 4 Tier 1 Partner cards to the box.

Shuffle the Program tiles into a face-down stack (or several smaller stacks) in Ada’s Study and deal 5 face up to the right of it.
Shuffle the Assignment cards into a face-down deck on its space in Ada’s Study and deal the top 4 face up to its right.
Set the four Starting Partner decks (S icon) aside. Shuffle the Tier 1 and the Tier 2 Partner cards separately and deal 1 Tier 1 card face down to each player (experienced players may draft them in reverse turn order instead).
Put the Tier 2 cards beside the Meetings area (bottom left of the board), the 6 remaining Tier 1 cards on top of them as one face-down deck, and deal the top 4 face up below the Meeting rooms.
Sort the Gear tiles. Shuffle the Multiplier Gears into a face-down stack beside the board and deal 2 onto their space in the Meetings area (cost side up). Give each player 1 Addition Gear and 2 Subtraction Gears; put the remaining Addition Gears on their space in Ada’s Study.
Make a general supply of Coal, Brass and coins below the Institutions, and put the Books on their space in Ada’s Study. The supply is unlimited: use a substitute if anything runs out.

Each player

Choose a colour and take its Player board, 12 discs, 4 Research tokens, Travel token and 7 Starting Partner cards.
Put your Player board in front of you, leaving room on every side for cards above and Assignments below.
Put a Research token on the lowest space of each of the four Research tracks.
Put your Travel token on London (the START space) on the Travel map.
Put your 12 discs on the 12 Gear spaces of your Player board.
Put an Innovation token and a Steam token on the marked starting spaces of the Innovation and Steam tracks of your board.
Shuffle your dealt Tier 1 Partner card with your 7 Starting Partner cards and put them face down on the deck space above the right of your board. Draw 4 cards into your hand.
Take £4, 1 Coal, 1 Brass, 1 Book and the 2 Player Aid cards.

First player, then expansions and modules

The player who most recently used a computer takes the First Player token; play goes clockwise. The second player takes £1 more, the third 1 Coal more, the fourth £1 and 1 Coal more.
Return every unused component to the box.
[Exhibition] Put the Great Exhibition board next to the main board.
[Exhibition] Shuffle the 12 Exhibitor cards, deal one into each of the 4 card spaces (Prince Albert, printed on the left, is always there) and put the rest face down beside the board.
[Exhibition] Put the 4 Visitor tokens at random on the Visitor spaces below the four card spaces; the fifth space (below Prince Albert) stays empty.
[Objectives] At the Objectives step you may replace any of the Objectives with Alternative Objective tiles; all four must still show the same letter.
[Bonus Tiles] Cover each of the 6 Workshop bonus spaces with a random Workshop Bonus tile, random side up.
[Essen] Instead of a random Tier 1 Partner card, deal each player one of the 4 asymmetrical Starting Partner cards to shuffle into their deck. Return the unused promo cards and 4 Tier 1 Partner cards to the box.

The main board

Put the main board in the middle of the table. In your first games skip the next three steps: the standard Universities, Objectives and Breakthroughs are printed on the board.
Sort the Assignment Scoring tokens into four colour stacks, the 1-point tokens underneath and the 2-point token on top, and put each stack on the space at the top of the Research track of that colour.
Shuffle the four 2-point Science Scoring tokens and put one at random above each Meeting room, then put the three 1-point tokens of the same Science underneath it.
Put all 50 dice in the bag. For each of the 6 Workshop spaces, draw 3 dice at random, roll them and put them in that space.
