Publish, Build and Objectives

Ada’s Dream end-of-turn choice — Publish with a Book or build a Gear — plus Gears, Steam, Program tiles and Objectives.

Publish or Build

At the end of either turn type you may do one of these, or neither:

Building can be done while the next player starts their turn.

Publish actions

AreaPublish action
Workshop Publish action WorkshopAdvance your Steam marker one space, paying the Coal shown on your Steam track for that step.
Ada’s Study Publish action Ada’s Study (purple)Take a disc from your Player board and stack it on one of your discs in an action area of the main board (not on an Objective). You do not gain that space’s reward, but you may take the level I advanced action of that area whatever your Research. Never more than two discs in one disc space; both count for scoring and Objectives. With no disc on the board, the disc is simply removed from the game.
Travel Publish action Travel (blue)Change dice on your Player board (Store or Mill) by up to 4 pips in total, split as you like over 1–4 dice, up or down. A 1 cannot go down and a 6 cannot go up.
Meetings Publish action Meetings (yellow)Gain a Multiplier Gear from the display and refill it at once.
Institutions Publish action Institutions (green)Swap any die on your Player board with any Workshop die, each taking the other’s exact place.

Build a Gear

To build a Gear tile from your personal supply, pay the cost printed on it and place it in any empty Gear space of your Mill, cost side down. Gear spaces start covered by your discs: you can only build where a disc has left. Once built, a Gear stays put unless an effect says otherwise.

PictureDescription
Subtraction GearSubtraction Gear · cost 1 Brass and 1 Coal; subtracts the next die in a line. A blank cost icon means 1 (FAQ).
Addition GearAddition Gear · cost 2 Brass and 1 Coal; adds the next die in a line.
Multiplier GearMultiplier Gear · each has its own cost; multiplies by the next die. Completed lines use ordinary multiplication-before-addition precedence, in line order (FAQ).

You start with 1 Addition and 2 Subtraction Gears. New Addition Gears come from Ada’s Study; Multiplier Gears from the Meetings display (refill it at once). An effect that says “build a Gear for free” uses a Gear already in your supply unless it also shows gaining one. A Subtraction Gear swapped for an Addition Gear leaves the game.

Steam

Your Steam marker caps the score of each completed line at the end: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 40 Prestige Points. Your marker starts on the marked space at the bottom of the track. The Workshop Publish (and some rewards Advance Steam (pay its Coal)) move it up one space, paying the Coal printed beside that step on your track (1 to 4 Coal for the higher steps). Advance Steam without paying Coal moves it without paying Coal.

Program tiles

Program tile Even Dice: worth 8 if a line holds three even dice

Program tiles are Ada’s punch cards. When you take one, place it at once on an empty Program space at the top of a column or the left of a row of your Mill and gain that space’s bonus:

Program spaceBonus
Column 1Book 1 Book
Column 2Gain Innovation 2 Innovation
Column 3Draw Partner cards draw 3 Partner cards
Row 1Any one Workshop bonus 2 different Workshop bonuses
Row 2Gain 1 Research on any track 2 Research
Row 3Brass 2 Brass

At the end a Program scores the Prestige on it if its line holds 3 dice that meet its condition; Gears and discs in the line do not matter. A Program scores at most once. Sequences are read left to right or top to bottom; grey dice are grey, never another colour. Every known Program is listed in Cards & Components.

Objectives

Each action area has an Objective (printed on the board, or a tile placed at setup). As soon as you meet one — at any time on your turn, checked by the end of it — place a disc from your Player board on it. The first player to complete it takes the higher-value space; players who complete it in the same number of turns also take the higher value; once play returns to the first player, everyone else takes the lower-value space. Once your disc is there you keep it even if you later stop meeting the requirement. Objectives score at the end.

The printed Objectives (7 for the first, 3 after):

AreaRequirement
Ada’s StudyHave built 3 Addition Gears.
TravelHave a disc on a University in each of the three regions.
MeetingsHave discs in 3 different Meeting rooms.
InstitutionsHave discs in 3 different Institutions.

An Objective tile shows one or two conditions; you need all of them at once. “Most” means more than any other player — a tie is not the most. The tiles are listed in Cards & Components.

[Objectives] Alternative Objective tiles replace some Objectives (Alternative Objectives).
