Dividends and Trains
Paying or withholding in 18 India, how the share price moves, closing a Company, buying and selling trains — and why trains never rust.
Withhold or pay
- Withhold: the whole revenue goes into the treasury; the share price moves one step left. The same happens with no train, no legal route or nothing paid.
- Pay: each share in a portfolio — player’s or Company’s — earns a tenth of the revenue from the bank; shares in the IPO, the Open Market or hands earn nothing (that part stays with the bank).
Guaranty Companies do not drop when they pay nothing; the bank pays 5% of the price instead.
Stock price movement
| Total revenue paid | Price moves |
|---|---|
| More than 0, up to half the price | No move |
| More than half, under double | 1 step right |
| At least double | 2 steps |
| At least triple | 3 steps |
| At least quadruple | 4 steps |
A Company that ends its turn without a train moves one more step left (Guaranty Companies too).
Closing a Company
A Company whose price marker reaches Closed closes at once: remove its charter, shares and tokens; its trains go to the Open Market, its treasury to the bank, its bonds and certificates to the Open Market. Its reserved locations are freed, the certificate limits drop, and the GIPR may take over its stations (GIPR).
No rusting
Trains never rust — no train is ever scrapped by a new phase, and no Company is forced to own a train (no emergency money raising either). The “train rush” is still there: a race to get better trains before the others, with too little money for every Company to have the best.
Buying trains
- Limit two trains per Company; at most one Phase IV train.
- New trains are sold in order: all of one type before the next. Used trains sold back sit separately in the Open Market and are bought at face value.
- Buy as many as the limit allows. Double-sided cards (4/4E, 4×2/4E×2, 4×3/4E×3): choose the side when buying; it stays that side for the rest of the game.
- From another Company: any price of at least ₹1, if both agree.
- Selling to the bank: any number of trains for their resale value — but not a train this Company bought from the bank in this same Operating Round.
