Tips and Strategy
A practical teaching order and verified references for The Great Library.
Teach the action chain
Start with the goal: get works onto your Workshop shelf, then use King’s Requests to place them in the shared Library and earn Renown. Explain how the seven locations create the supply chain: Navigation gathers cargo, Scriptorium translates, Academy develops research and Great Works, and Palace/Garden/School/Harbor support those plans.
Your first Generation
Before placing scholars, identify which Request you can realistically fulfill and what resource or translation is missing. Use Planning placements to gain enough Time, then choose the order of actions that makes that Request possible. Watch the 20 Time cap and the pass-cost exchange during Execution.
Rules reminders
- An Execution turn allows up to two different Executive actions before one Main action.
- Read ends your participation for that Generation and itself costs no Time.
- In two players, placing a Local Scholar beneath the opponent’s costs 2 Time; the opponent gains 2 Time.
- Scribes used in the Scriptorium are discarded at Generation end.
- The current Head Librarian governs the Library placement reward for that Generation.
- A Great Work requires a matching Translation Stone; acquiring it resets the Research track as described in the core rules.
Videos versus rules
Use the Videos page to see a multiplayer or solo playthrough. For exact costs, turn timing, card effects and edge cases, use the linked publisher rulebooks. Supplemental transcripts and creator advice are context, not an additional rules authority.
