Solo Mode
Pursue a high score over at most 15 turns as Emperor Trajan returns to Ostia.
Setup changes
Play the base game with one player, but do not use Honor cards. Use 8 Amphora in the supply. Patronus and Personal Honor cannot be combined with solo mode. Place the solo board nearby; shuffle the 5 Gift chips and place one face up in each shaded space. Shuffle the 4 Achievement tiles and place two face up in the notches. Put the First Player marker above the track as the Emperor marker and set the four Achievement cubes nearby.
Emperor step
At the start of each turn, before Select, move the Emperor marker one space down: straight, diagonally left, or diagonally right. It cannot move sideways, up or off the board. Gain any resources shown, then claim and discard a Gift chip if present. When crossing an Achievement line at the start of turns 6 and 11, check its tile before collecting other benefits from the marker’s space. Meet the smaller requirement for one cube and the larger requirement for two cubes total on that tile. Each cube scores 5 points.
All base actions work normally except you cannot buy Honor cards. Each time you complete a full animal-and-noble icon set, immediately gain one Triumph; icons from endgame effects do not count for this trigger.
End and solo score
End after a normal base-game trigger or when the Emperor reaches the bottom row on turn 15. Finish the current turn. Score the base game, add 5 per Achievement cube (maximum 20), then add the printed VP beside the Emperor marker’s row. The solo rules include performance ranks from Aediles Ostiae through Praefectus Praetorio; they are a personal score benchmark, not a second player’s score.
