Solo

Set up the board and shared supplies as a two-player game. Use the standard 12-round duration and the two-player spaces.
Set up cargoes as for two players, but make a stack of 12 Level III tiles: put two at the bottom, place the End Game marker above them, then stack the other ten on top. Add the usual Level II tiles above the marker and the five face-up Level I tiles.
Set up two player boards with their normal pieces, side by side. One board belongs to you; the other belongs to the automated Game Player.
You always place first: put your first worker on the first grey order spot by blue, then place the Game Player’s two workers, then your second worker.
Give yourself 5 gold and the Game Player 6 gold.
Choose one career for yourself. Shuffle and draw one of the remaining careers for the Game Player. Apply each career’s starting changes and put the Game Player’s matching Career Priority and Location Rules cards by its board.
Shuffle the Location Activation cards into a face-down deck near the Game Player. Place the Gain 3rd Worker tile nearby.

Place the coins beside the board. Give players starting gold by seat order: 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Put the resource cubes in the warehouse supply. Fill the resource spaces at locations 1, 3, 5 and 9 with yellow, red, brown and black cubes respectively.
Fill all Shoreditch market spaces with matching resource cubes.
Put the loan tiles on the Loans Office near location 4, St Martin’s.
Put the grey share-price marker on the £1 space at the bottom left of the share track.
Put all 12 Class I and six shuffled Class IIIa ship tiles in the bag. Return Class IIIb tiles to the box. Put the 12 Class II and remaining six Class IIIa tiles beside the East India Company docks for the later bag change.
