Shop, Buildings and the Opera
Opera Magna's Shop Board, Raw and Refined Goods, Certificates, and the Refined Goods phase: construct Buildings on the left or right, send Goods to the Opera's Worksites, convert.
Your Shop Board

- A Refined Goods spaces — Player Tokens mark the Refined Goods you have this turn.
- B Building spaces — three on each side, Large at the top, then Medium, then Small.
- C Goods and Certificate tracks — one track per Raw Good, with its Certificate.
- D Starting discount — 1 off one Raw Good; different on each Shop Board.
Goods and Certificates
There are eight Goods, in four colour pairs. Each Raw Good refines into the Refined Good of the same colour:
| Raw Good | Refined Good |
|---|---|
Raw Goods
Raw Goods are stored on your Shop Board: one Player Token per track shows how many you have, from 0 to 9. Gaining moves it right, spending moves it left. You can never hold more than 9 of one Raw Good; extra ones are lost.
Certificate levels
Each track also holds a white Certificate token. When a Raw Good token moves right onto the Certificate’s space, it pushes the Certificate one space right — this is the main way to raise a Certificate. Spending Goods never moves the Certificate back (only missing Goods do). The column a Certificate has reached gives its level, 1, 2 or 3, for the Refined Good of that track. You need the right level to send that Good to a Worksite, and each Certificate scores its level at the end.
Refined Goods
Refined Goods you gain go on their spaces on your Shop Board as Player Tokens. They cannot be stored: anything left at the end of the Refined Goods phase is discarded.
Refined Goods phase
Use this turn’s Refined Goods in any combination, with these actions, as often as you like and in any order:
At the end of the phase, discard any Refined Goods you did not use.
Construct a Building
You always have 2 Buildings under construction in front of your Shop Board. Each Building Card shows its construction cost: 2 (Small), 3 (Medium) or 4 (Large) Refined Goods of the card’s colour. Place your Refined Goods on the matching icons. They stay there until the Building is complete, so you can build over several turns.
Completing a Building
When every icon is covered, the Building is complete: return the tokens to your supply and slide the card under your Shop Board, half visible, on the left or the right, in the row of its size (Small at the bottom, Large at the top). There is no limit to how many Buildings stack in one position.
- The first Building in each of the six positions unlocks that position’s Conversion (left) or Cart (right).
- Its effects work at once, even this turn.
- At the end it scores by size: Small 2, Medium 3, Large 4
.
A new Building is taken only at the end of your turn.
Buildings on the left
- Card effect: a discount. The Raw Goods in the card’s top corner are a permanent discount on City costs, added to your starting discount and all others.
- Shop Board effect: a Conversion. Once per turn, for each left position holding at least one Building, you may pay the Raw Goods printed beside it to gain its Refined Good.
Buildings on the right
- Card effect: the special effect at the bottom of the card — immediate (lightning), lasting, or scored at the end of the game (flag). All 36 are in Cards & Components.
- Shop Board effect: a Cart. The first Building in each right position unlocks a Cart. Each Cart sends 1 Refined Good to the Opera once per turn. You start with no Carts, so your first right-side Building is what lets you contribute to the Opera.
Advance the Opera

- A Level 3 Worksites (top row) — B Level 2 — C Level 1 (bottom row).
- D Small, E Medium and F Large Building decks, with two face-up cards of each.
The Opera has 12 Worksites, each a token showing the Refined Good it wants and the Certificate level it needs. Each turn you may send one Refined Good per unlocked Cart.
Choose a Worksite
To send a Good to a Worksite, all of these must be true:
- you have at least one Refined Good of the type it asks for;
- your Certificate for that Good has reached the level it needs;
- you have not already sent a Good to that Worksite;
- every lower Worksite in the same column already holds at least one Player Token (anyone’s).
Send the goods
Move the Player Token of that Refined Good from your Shop Board onto the Worksite. Several players
can contribute to the same Worksite. The first player to put a token there immediately resolves
the Worksite’s effect (effects marked with a flag are scored at the end instead). All
Worksite effects are in Cards & Components. At the end, each of your
tokens on a Worksite scores 1, 2 or 3
by the Worksite’s level, and having more tokens on
the Opera than other players scores too (scoring).
[Eagle] The expansion’s two Opera Boards change which Worksites unlock which (The Eagle & The Lion).
Convert Refined Goods
Discard any number of Refined Goods from your Shop Board and gain the same number of the matching
Raw Goods (a
Bell becomes a
Lead, and so on).
