Tips & Strategy
Plan the character draft around witness calls, identity clues, and escape routes.
How to teach it
Teach the two different victory conditions first. Then show how one witness call clears either the visible or invisible group. The Mr. Jack board game - Playthrough & Review walks through the round and a full match; the Mr Jack board game how to setup play and review two player popular fun deduction AmassGames errata is a second visual explanation. Where they differ, the English rules and extension booklet win.
The first player alternates by round. Demonstrate the 1–2–1 selection pattern: Detective starts odd rounds, Jack starts even rounds. Agree before play whether the second player chooses both cards in advance: the community answer is to choose and resolve one at a time, but the official book does not make this declaration timing explicit. See the FAQ.
As the Detective
Try to balance the remaining suspects between lit/adjacent and dark spaces. Whichever side Jack declares, the other group is cleared. Use Holmes early when a private alibi draw could narrow the options; keep the result secret from Jack. When a likely suspect is identified, preserve a character activation that can physically reach and accuse that hex.
As Jack
Try to keep the suspects in one visibility group so the witness call clears as few as possible. Watch which characters the Detective chooses and avoid giving Holmes information without planning around it. After an Invisible witness call, check whether the disguised character can reach an unblocked exit during the next round; crossing off the board costs one movement point.
First-game reminders
The alibi deck’s edges can reveal their printed colors. Follow the publisher’s erratum and store the deck in the box tray so an opponent cannot read an edge. The character ability timing is printed on each card; check before moving. Players may sit side-by-side, with the Detective to the yellow edge and Jack to the grey edge, if that is easier for both to see the map.

The videos are for visual teaching and strategy. The official base-game page and erratum and the 2018 Extension rules control exact setup, ability timing, and movement. The FAQ includes designer clarifications on private alibi draws, character selection order, and accusations.
