The 2018 Extension
Choose characters and starting positions, then play with six new investigators.
This is the revised 2018 extension. It requires the base game and replaces the fixed starting arrangement with a player-driven character selection and placement sequence. It adds six characters: Madame, Spring-Heeled Man, John Pizer, Inspector Abberline, Joseph Lane, and Professor Moriarty.
Short tag: [Extension].
What it adds
Six character cards, six alibi cards, six double-sided character tokens, a barricade and a question marker. See every pictured face.
Setup changes
Follow the cast selection and placement procedure below instead of the base game’s fixed character positions.
Select the cast
Use Jeremy Bert, Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Lestrade, and John Smith in every game. Shuffle the ten other character cards from the base game and extension, then deal five to each player. Each player secretly selects two; reveal the four selections and add them to the mandatory cast. Return unused tokens and cards to the box. If Moriarty was selected, keep the six unused character cards face up with the question token nearby.
Place the characters
Set out the base witness card, round marker, gaslights, and manhole covers. Draw four chosen character cards: the Detective places one matching token on a street hex, Jack places two, then the Detective places the remaining one. Repeat with the last four: Jack places one, the Detective places two, then Jack places the last. With Joseph Lane, place the barricade between any two street hexes; it cannot cover an exit. Shuffle all eight character cards and set the secret alibi as in the base rules.
New abilities
Madame moves one to six hexes and cannot use the sewers. Spring-Heeled Man may spend movement points to jump over one obstacle or a character, subject to the landing and path restrictions printed in the rules. John Pizer moves one to three hexes, then makes each adjacent character flee up to three hexes; the movement stays above ground and cannot pass through Pizer. Inspector Abberline continuously limits adjacent characters to one movement point when they are activated.
Joseph Lane must move the barricade before or after his movement. It separates two street hexes: characters on opposite sides are not adjacent for visibility, and nobody can cross it. Professor Moriarty selects one unused character card when first activated and copies that character’s movement and ability. On a later Moriarty activation, discard the previous copied card and choose another from the unused row.
Extension clarifications
If Pizer frightens several adjacent characters, move each as far as possible, up to three hexes. If Abberline’s restriction applies, a frightened character can move only one. A jump onto another character is an accusation and ends the game. If Moriarty copies Joseph Lane, leave the barricade where it is after the unused Joseph Lane card leaves the game.
Scoring changes
There is no points score. Base victory conditions remain; Jack may also use Pizer’s fear movement to send his disguised character through an unblocked exit when the Witness card is Invisible.
