Tips & Strategy
Practical reminders for reading the tableau and timing your moods.
How to teach it
Teach one action first: play one mood or pass. Then introduce the three timing labels on cards and demonstrate how a new mood can change an old one’s value. The official How to Play Mood Swings from Magic: The Gathering is a concise refresher; the Mood Swings Explained video from Good Time Society gives another short introduction.
Your first game
Use the shared deck as sold and skip deck customization. Read each new card aloud, check whether its ability is optional, and keep the hand, discard and in-play areas separate. The One More Game playthrough from Good Time Society and We Play Mood Swings from Good Luck High Five show the flow at the table.
Strategy from the rules and demonstrations
- Recount the whole tableau after a card moves. Ongoing values may change before the next action or scoring; the official play sequence explains this timing in Extended Rules.
- Evaluate an extra-play card by what it costs and what it exposes. Some effects require a discard, a mood leaving play, or a qualifying color/value; keep the cost in mind before planning a chain.
- A card that changes a rival’s score can also change your own relative lead. The Dueling Games rules review from Dueling Games walks through card interactions, while Is It Worth It To Buy Mood Swings? from Tolarian Community College discusses the game’s range and product.
- Cards stay in play between rounds unless an ability moves them. Consider both the current round and the ongoing combinations you leave behind.
- In a 3–4 player game, the earliest actual play breaks a tied score. A strong early mood can therefore protect a tie, even when a later player’s total matches it.
- The lowest score in a 3–4 player round earns the extra-play helper. If you are already behind, check whether a legal sequence can use that additional action next turn.
